    Beginners' courses

There will be cheaper training if you look for it. I’m on the train to my evening welding course at the moment, full NVQ over an academic year for £600 paid in instalments over the year. There are further subsidies available for people on a means tested basis. I travel an hour each way, first on...

Insulating the Garage Door for cheap (ish)

How often are you going to need to use the door for access? If infrequent a stud wall made to be quick to take down and put back may be the best way.

Frying pans ..........an odd request ...

The pan’s pretty indestructible, but before the seasoning is well and truly baked on i found the wife was pretty good at getting rid of it! Being able to use it on the hob, oven, Bbq and over a camp fire without worrying about bits melting or getting damaged has been great

    Yandles - poor experience

The consumer protection on my credit card is principally for lower priced items. Anything over a certain amount isn’t covered but pretty sure there is no minimum. Anyhoot just use the amazon returns process and you’ll be fine

    The Whitest Wood

How big does it need to be? Tagua nut is very white and works well, but only small sizes available Holly can be very white but needs to be seasoned carefully to avoid going grey

    cooking

New oven and the turkey was it’s maiden cook. It managed to get a 13lb turkey cooked in 90mins. Caught me by surprise as was expecting it to take about 2 1/2 hours, so it got a 2 hour rest while the rest of the dinner was made! Was delicious though

Secret Santa 2019 - thanks, everyone.

Huge thanks to Secret Santa who sent a wonderfully made Scottish Ash leather faced mallet and a very nice bottle of single malt. Really nice to have something made by a member of the forum and shall get ample use once the workshop is finished. In the meantime I shall put my feet up, have a...

Secret Santa 2019 - thanks, everyone.

Seeing as the wife has confessed to not getting me anything this year (which Is great as I haven’t got her anything either) this is the only thing under the tree at the moment. (We’re in the middle of an extension so I could have put a bow on the new settee, boiler, doors and she could have...

    BLO on a chopping board

Mineral oil/liquid paraffin followed by a home brew mixture of pure beeswax and mineral oil. After a couple of months needs retreating but during that time it stops liquids soaking in. This isn’t so much to protect the wood but help stopping everything taste of onions. A side benefit has been...

    Sanding belts warning.

BND abrasives are a great supplier - phone them and say what you’re using them for and they’ll recommend what’s best.

    Kitchen island, movable?

I toyed with a similar idea. You can get heavy duty casters with wind down feet, but the whole structure would need strengthening to be feasible.

Secret Santa 2019 - thanks, everyone.

have next week off and plan was to potter about in workshop, however due to some last minute let downs and a couple of complications the workshop still has no roof so I haven’t been able to get everything out of storage. Instead my week will be sent trying to make sure the extension gets back on...

    An invaluable lesson

All my workshop is in storage at the moment, if you can wait a few weeks I think I have a bit about that size. Depends how urgently you need it

    anyone else got a cold?

So scientific studies found the link with dairy to not be supported but that antibiotics are one of the major advances in medicine..... For viruses they won’t work, but for bacterial infections they are impressive.

    Prepping old walls for paint

Moved into ours and stripped the wallpaper, had bare plaster from when the house was built in the 30s. Scrubbing brush and hot sugar soapy water cleaned them. Minor filling followed by leyland trade Matt emulsion. First coat watered down, second coat neat. Can’t remember the name of the filler...

Frying pans ..........an odd request ...

Since getting my iron skillet I’ve barely used my le creuset frying pan, it’s built a decent seasoning quickly and now gives a better sear on steaks and is more non-stick. Another to look at would be the debuyer minerale pans. After a lot of research I nearly went for one before getting the...

Frying pans ..........an odd request ...

Alex Pole makes great pans out of his Somerset workshop https://www.alexpoleironwork.com/ They’re hand spun and then forged handles riveted on. I’ve barely used another pan since I got mine. Very reasonable for something handmade in the UK too

    Hardening for vice jaws.

Id remake some in mild and see how they get on before going ahead and hardening a set. If you do harden remember to drill and countersink your holes first. It’s useful to have a vertical v groove at one end and a horizontal one the whole width to help holding round stock. Easy to add to a mild...
