What kind of rust is this?

I’ve had similar pitting on new/freshly lapped surfaces. Keep it oiled and use it, all will be fine.

    Diamond Sharpening

Have used them before with no issues. I like the atomas in the coarse to mid range, at the finer end though I don’t find any advantage (normally speed) over waterstones

    Hardening and tempering

Hardening and retempering would risk knackering it completely. Scaling, warping, stress fractures on thin sections. Not something I’d want to do unless I had no other choice and didn’t mind replacing it if it went wrong. Have you tried using it to see how it performs now?

    Travel for exercise?

Don’t forget that the guidance you mention is for England, don’t think Wales has issued anything similar and is free to impose different rules. So far they’ve largely been stricter than England though.

    Diagnosing sharpening problems

What’s the issue you’ve got, that it’s not sharp enough for use or that it’s not straight? If not sharp enough, you either haven’t hit the apex or you haven’t deburred. Diamond stones do bed in after a bit of use and slow down, so if you’re sharpening based on number of strokes, or time at...

Help with replacing a ball catch

So, took a bit of a struggle, but it’s out Used a carbide burr to make a slot for a screw driver- well I tried but the bit was blunt and so it was slow going Managed to twist it, very tight but meant any glue bond was broken Found a bolt with a thread slightly bigger than the hole, could get...

Help with replacing a ball catch

Cheers, trying to thread something in to pull it out was an idea I’d toyed with but sadly nothing suitable to hand. The screwdriver technique is worth a try, if I can break any glue bond it should pry out

Help with replacing a ball catch

With Lockdown in effect it’s a chance to tick some things of the round to it list, one of which I would appreciate some thoughts on. There’s a broken ball catch on this cabinet door (ercol model 351), for which I’ve managed to source a replacement Any ideas on how to extract the old one...

Which way to use a grindstone wheel for chisels?

Tormek’s allow edge leading or edge trailing. Their details say edge leading is more aggressive and edge trailing better for finishing. I have a creusen grinder that runs in reverse that was cheap off the bay, plan was to put a felt wheel on it for power stropping but not gotten round to it yet.

Secret Santa 2019 - thanks, everyone.

I was using the mallet I received to help get the ceiling up in the workshop today, so thanks again secret santa, it came in very handy for some gentle persuading.

Does anyone have a sharpening question?

Or sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. Colouring the bevel with a marker pen really helps to see progress and keep track of which serration is next

Need help restoring an old vice

If the screws have snapped in it’s usually a sign that twisting them out is going to be tough. Centre punch, drill and then retapping is the course of action I’d take. Particularly if you have some thread exposed that will index the tap, as it can then just clean out the old thread if you’re lucky

    Tool making advice

If it’s not got excessively hot when forming no need to anneal/ normalise again. If you want to heat treat it, you’ll need to have a way of heating it above the critical temperature (700-1200c). For simple carbon steels like O1 the curie point (where it becomes non-magnetic) is used as a good...

Real need / necessity for a block plane

Describing type of steel independently of heat treatment will lead to circular debates. A2 heat treated by one manufacturer may be very different to A2 heat treated by another, and HT has the potential to have as much of an impact on edge quality than the steel type.

    0.5mm pencil leads.

I’ve found Uni nano dia leads have been good in my pentel graphgear which is also the best mechanical pencil I’ve used

    Strop Saturation

As above, scrape it to freshen up the surface and then reapply compound of choice. I’d avoid oiling the strop as it’s easy to add to much and that impacts the results much more than not oiling.

You think you've got a big table?

In Tredegar house near Newport they have this 42fter. Edit: the very one which started the thread. They keep the surface covered but the size is impressive. Bad phone pics from last summer when I went to see it
