    Piher Corpus clamps

FYI they are called “400” as that’s the rated clamping pressure of 400kg rather than the opening. I keep umming and ahing over clamps too, any view of the similar own branded ones from the like of Axminster?

    Disaster! A broken water stone.

If you aren’t going to reglue keep the pieces. You can use them as slurry stones (nagura) for sharpening or similar to a rust eraser for dealing with spots of corrosion.

Making this tool... could I do it?

With Covid a lot of the courses have been impacted. Dave Budd runs courses in Devon, and he’s back up operating. I think Owen Bush is running his one day courses now and if you have him a ring he may be able to accommodate you making something different to the norm Likewise Stephen Nowacki...

Windows is making defender a bit more aggressive which makes it more effective but gives quirks. i have the same question as you if the folders are marked as read only how is draftsight allowing Mike to edit and then save docs to that path? If using command line to reset the attributes as an...

Minor computer irritation. Can anyone help?

This is sounding more like controlled folder access being on. If you give the following sequence a try: Windows Key+i > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus and threat protection > Manage Settings under Virus and threat protection Settings > Manage Controlled Folder access > Toggle off...

Stopping a butchers block top sliding about

If you can’t have anything coming up the sides your options are constrained to increasing friction. Either increase the surface area of contact or use something grippy

Minor computer irritation. Can anyone help?

I would suspect this is the reason. Rebooting the PC helps clear the cache which will drop the temp versions of the files. By not rebooting these are hanging around and so when you go to open a file it sees that there is a cached version and so warns you. Rebooting machines generally helps keep...

    Finish for kitchen knife handle

Hard wax oil works well, and easy to top up Tru oil gives a much more resistant finish, but isn’t worth buying just for one handle. Food grade linseed oil, commonly sold as flaxseed oil, also works well and is easy to top up, plus is handy in the kitchen for seasoning pans as well as making...

Making this tool... could I do it?

How much forging kit do you have? Simple enough with a couple of tack welds to hold out while you heat to welding temp and then flux with borax. Gentle hits working from the middle out to avoid cold shuts, but hit it quickly after taking it out to avoid it cooling too much. Gas forge can be...

A good hardwood for practicing on?

If you’ve got good sized boards of walnut I’d be keeping them until I had a project that I could make well, and in my skill level. If you want to practice making something square on all 4 faces, sawing in a straight line and staying perpendicular, marking a line and working to it, etc I’d get...

    Angle grinder buying advice

If you want the best, It’s a metabo wepba IMO With the jobs you’ve mentioned a cheapy 4.5” will be fine. Worth getting the thin stainless cutting discs, they make much easier work than the standard. Worth getting a set of ear defenders to go with it, they’re loud things

Running end grain through a thicknesser..

There’s more to end grain blocks than meets the eye. Also for the majority of people high quality edge grain is going to be a better fit to needs. My main chopping board is a Boardsmith from the US. Without a significant investment in tooling, or spending a lot of time I don’t think I could...

    Tormek v 'Scary Sharp'

Chisels and plane irons - rough in on a high speed grinder then finish on stones. Knives - just stones Scary sharp if you aren’t going to be doing it often, otherwise stones win out With all sharpening it’s skill over equipment for a working edge. Just pick something and keep doing it, you’ll...
