    General purpose plane

Vintage Stanley / record can be made to work well, if you have a bit of time to tune. Otherwise the Workshop heaven bedrocks are nice and will work straight away without needing you to try and get something to perform well, without knowing what performing well feels like.

    Rutlands tools

A company that filters out any negative reviews on their website is demonstrating their company ethics. I bought from them years ago and doubt I ever will again unless it’s a known brand that isn’t available anywhere else.

Just opened mine and have a really great set of pieces for marking out A small square, marking knife, scratch awl, ruler and pencils. Some nice turning being displayed on the awl and knife which will see plenty of use. Merry Christmas and many thanks to Secret Santa. It’s really great to be...

    cooking

We’re having chicken with every veg possible on Christmas day. I like turkey but the wife prefers chicken, and there’s only two of us this year. Normally make a bit of effort with something new, but can’t really be bothered this year

    Apple Watch....

If you go for the cellular one you need a new sim, and you used to need a new contract too. Like I said I’ve not missed it as have my phone with me anyway. The health stuff is only really worth it if you have something you want to monitor- if fit and healthy then you’re not really going to use...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

The post mentions gauge plate, which is typically 01 tool steel. I keep fancying making a wooden plane or two, being laminated those seem fairly straight forward, but imagine there’s a bit of fettling to get them performing well

    Apple Watch....

I’m enjoying mine, got the latest one for the heart tracker as was having a few episodes that I wanted to record to show doctors etc. I didn’t bother with the one you can put a sim in and just use tethered to phone. Haven’t regretted that so far. The rubber straps are a bit sweaty plastic, so...

    Concrete wall in garage

Make sure you don’t overheat the drill bits of it’s taking a while. Also, assume you aren’t drilling a lintel which would have steel reinforcing within it that will resist a masonry drill. Easiest would be to try and borrow and sds

Connected fire and smoke alarms. Scotland

Put an interconnected set in my house, For a few hundred quid all in it’s good peace of mind and will send alerts to my phone too. Over their lifespan it’s under 50p a week.

Childrens Toy Shed; Reclaiming My Shed

Nice work, I have something similar planned for the Christmas break to free up more workshop space

    Treating pressure treated wood

What do you want the osmo to do? It’s a good finish for internal wood, and wooden floors but wouldn’t paint a shed with it. Once it’s dry you may want to consider painting the inside with pain to brighten it up if the plan is to use it like an outdoor room. If it isn’t leaking and is raised off...

    Outdoor Oak Finishing, or not...

Unfinished though maybe coat the roof would be my vote

    Holiday Plans

I’m hopefully going to build a storage shed ( so all the garden stuff can come out of the workshop) and a log store. Have had the timber for a while but not had the time to do it start to finish til now. Also need to get some more shelves up and sort out. On the house list I need to finish...

Now is the time to buy 150 mm metric Starrett Combination Square

Having a look at other Starrett squares on Amazon and this seems to be at pretty much eBay prices, imperial though Starrett C9-12-4R Combination Set, With Cast Iron Heads, Centring, Square And Protractor Heads, Black Wrinkle Finish, Satin Chrome Blade, 12", 4R Grad Starrett C9-12-4R...

Now is the time to buy 150 mm metric Starrett Combination Square

Mine arrived. Sticker says made in USA. Lighter weight than I was expecting. Nice it’s all metric as that’s what I work in for small stuff. Quick scribing of two lines off a straight edge shows it’s nice and square though.

Now is the time to buy 150 mm metric Starrett Combination Square

I took a punt as have been looking on eBay. If it’s genuine it’s less than half the price of any other retailer for starrett quality.
