What wood is this and how best to finish

I’d look for a specific outdoor furniture oil as suggested above. It’ll probably be pretty thirsty for the first few coats

    Bandsaw tension meter build questions

I have the Starrett gauge through some fortunate ebaying. If any pics or measurements would be helpful let me know.

    2022 Secret Santa

After missing it last year keen to be back in this time round, gifts from prior two years have been in fairly regular use since received, and knowing they were made by someone adds to the enjoyment.

    Workshop Heaven Experiences

I’ve interacted over email with great success. Maybe drop them a line first and arrange a suitable time to call

    Teak Supplier North West

Are you sure it’s teak and not one of the many lookalikes?

Extracting Rusted Furniture Bolts From Outdoor Furniture

I find a driver in a brace gives a lot of controlled torque. If the head snaps then at least you can separate the pieces, and then use a plug cutter if needed to extract the old screw thread. If they’re fused right - do you need to remove them though? Sometimes more effort than worth trying to...

    Thread sealants

Loctite comes in different grades depending on torque needed to break it

    Started my heavy bench build

Good luck with it, once all the laminations are done levelling the top will be good exercise with a plane

Has anyone ever asked for/received a discount when making a larger order from WorkshopHeaven?

If you’re polite and courteous, and take no for an answer why not ask. If I’m spending a fair amount in one place I’ll often give them a call and see if there’s any wiggle room. Sometimes you get nothing, sometimes it’s something small like a few free samples or free shipping, other times it’s a...

TOOLS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED

Is there a tool you use often that is just a cheapy - upgrading that to something really nice means you have something you wouldn’t have bought but will use.

Reaction wood/internal stresses - what's really going on?

Once you’d thicknessed it did you let it stabilise again before continuing to process it? Did you reduce the thickness from both sides or just one? If it’s happening each time you try, and with different timbers it sounds like part of the process is off

Honing bevel on a chisel with hollow grind

Depends….. But in your case I’d rest the bevel on a stone so the heel and tip contact and hone lightly. If that edge stands up to whatever you use it for then you can happily continue. If the edge fails then thicken it up with a steeper bevel, if it doesn’t perform well I’d drop the angle a...

    A bumper year for apples

Trees arriving from cold storage often take a while to wake up. Key thing to check as above is that it’s sprouting above the graft to the rootstock

Getting paid to work on your own home

More likely they were checking to see if your costs were inflated by buying additional materials for home use and putting them as a business expense, reducing your profit and therefore tax liability, but without generating a business asset.

    Bandsaw blade flutter

What have you used the blades for cutting? Could be possible if you’ve been cutting a load of tight radius curves that you’ve affected the blades. If just straight rips, and the blade is tracking properly on the wheels I’d go back to tension Have you emailed Ian at tuffsaws to get his views?

    Bandsaw blade flutter

People have come up with ways using a guitar tuner to measure the pitch and have a degree of repeatability I managed to get a Starrett gauge from eBay for a good price, works really well and takes a lot of the faff out of setting the tension

Belt and Disc Sander : Latest distraction

Looks good, could be worth checking the platten is still flat and the rollers haven’t worn concave. I’d just use it and check the belts track ok and that it’ll reliably give a perpendicular edge

Pop quiz, spot what the issue is... and the fix

Guessing the error was drilling the hole for the thread before the hole for the nuts?

    INTERLINKED SMOKE AND HEAT ALARMS

I have the Google nest, and they work pretty well, also the built in motion night light is pretty handy for the increasing night time trips to the toilet. Just make a bit of the codes on the back of them before installing or any changes to home wireless means you need to get the ladders out again

Bowed long boards - any remedy?

15mm isn’t much over 2 metres, with that design there will be ways to firm it up as people have suggested. If the level of bowing matches then a slight curve to the headboard could be part of the design and stop it being so rectilinear
