    End grain chopping board

Simplest approach would be get a decent sized bit of 2” thick sycamore or beech, plane it flat and you’ll have a nice board that will be easy to skim every 6months with a sharp plane. If you really want endgrain then try and get something 2” thick and using decent sized pieces in a brick...

    Do you sell your stuff?

I will ask for a charity donation, lately to Campaign Against Living Miserably. Saves me having to keep track for tax, hopefully does some good for the world, and I pick and choose what I want to do. It’s a hobby so I want to enjoy it and part of that is making things that interest me. Best...

    Budget board stuff

Stuffing and osb would be my go to. Screwed together so can be disassembled at will

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Cheers all - as I say dry fit is seamless, other woods have been seamless, maple though just seems to want to show the line. Have a few more blocks so plenty of opportunity to experiment - though think the next few will be a more obedient wood. Have a big chunk of quilted maple that was silly...

On the pitted vintage hand tools

If the potting is where the apex is formed you’ll need to remove it to get a clean sharp edge. If it’s on the concave surface then trickier than the convex. I wouldn’t try to do the whole chisel - just where counts. Grinding out pitting takes a bit of time - I redid some old chisels recently...

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Kant twist clamps are my preferred - though spendy so am growing the set slowly. I don’t normally use the quick grips - with mini g clamps in their place - and don’t think I’ll use them again for this. If going hide glue sounds like may need to repurpose a record vice as a vertical press to...

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Starts off as a solid piece, resawn, hollowed, then glued back together, before shaping into an almond profile. Makes a saya for a chef knife - I always want the join to be invisible

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Ah interesting - does it need to be hot melt or worth giving the liquid WH sell a try?

    Crisp glue lines in maple

Any good tips to get an invisible glue line in maple- I had an invisible join in dry fit, once glued and clamped I inevitably get a visible line at the join. Other woods like Ash and Beech and oak seem much more compliant to not showing the line. Have been using classic Pva- would switching that...

First stick welds, advice? 2.5mm mild steel, quite thin e6013 electrodes, 50 amps. Why would they be ‘bad welds’ and what do I look for in welds?

Try and get comfortable when learning you can try and get the piece at a comfortable heigh and get your body in a good position. Looks like you’re moving a bit too fast, slow down and concentrate on moving in a straight line. The spatter is caused by long arcing so try and keep a shorter arc.

Is it worth buying premium tools if you don't use them enough ? Metabo grinder.

Fancied one of those wepba for a while but couldn’t justify it when the crud covered dewalt keeps going strong. Good to hear the vibration control works noticeably

    Small carving knife blades

Adam ashworth has in stock options https://www.ashandiron.co.uk/category/just-blades Nic Westerman makes really well regarded carving blades but has a backlog I think https://nicwestermann.co.uk/ Or if you want specific shapes I could make something in a weekend (or two if using something...

    Copper clad worktops?

Neat job. I fancied a copper top for part of our kitchen- with the patina like on copper pans changing with use and adding interest. I was overruled and we had synthetic quartz type stone. Fairly impervious if you wipe up quick- otherwise BKF needed to spot treat any marks. Copper would be a lot...

Help me with my first ever mig welds, why do they look like Swiss cheese and will I ever improve (cry for help after being demolished on Reddit)

Still learning to weld myself so pinch of salt with the below: Mig needs clean metal so go over the surface with a flap disk first This keeps your weld pool clean and helps avoid porosity. Set your amps and gas flow rate for the task at hand - when learning this is hard and experience helps...

Shooting board versus mitre trimmer for fine boxes

For boxes I’d go shooting plane as gives more versatility - doesn’t have to be expensive - a woody is easy to adjust to being 90degrees between side and sole and has good reference faces.

    Which hard varnish?

Melamine is effectively a hard varnish already. Trying to coat it with something will likely give you a worse finish, and you won’t have the option of sanding it off and starting again. I’d just crack on and use it
