Help reducing contrast on dark grain in oak worktops (pics in thread)

If you’re happy after the Rubio - have you tried just using a clear osmo after instead of the osmo terra which is one of the darkest they do? Top oil in natural won’t add any more colour- and you seem to be unhappy with the added colour.

    Mending a Table Knife

Jb weld is more heat resistant than the devcon or west systems epoxies I’ve used If heat does soften it then it will harden on cooling so will get you another 20years or so. Only thing to consider is that the epoxied knife may be a bit more solid/weighty than the others

What wood drill bit type - 14mm, 24mm and dog holes?

I’d use a star m auger bit - they give very nice clean holes. You could use a Brad point (star m 601 type bits are nice) but an auger will be easier to drive in that size. For the vice I’d give clearance on the screw hole (25mm) but try to avoid slop on the support rods (14mm) For dog holes...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

I’d shear all the undergrowth back to ground level so they have more of a head start

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Willow will root from branches pushed into the ground if you can find a tree nearby

Rather look at the motor wattage look at the Air Watts or Pascals to get a sense of suction power The choice of massive motors will be constrained due to this: https://energy-efficient-products.ec.europa.eu/product-list/vacuum-cleaners_en

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Genuine interest - why would forging your own tools using charcoal you make from your woods be less self sufficient? To my mind being able to make tools you need is more a step towards reducing reliance on the outside world. I guess salvage leaf springs don’t come from the land but I was...

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

Cut smaller pieces of timber, use them to make charcoal. Go to scrapyard and get some leaf springs. Use charcoal and hammer to forge leaf springs into tools. A froe and a drawknife first and then have a go at an axe. The biggest rock you can find can do duty as an anvil

Can I make all usual structures with just wood from my small woodland?

I’m d try to find a course on timber framing and then go on it - will give you a lot of insight and a chance to be shown techniques you can use on your own land

How easy is it to fit a kitchen?

Depends on how big a kitchen, how good the current condition is, and how willing they are to put up with any mistakes. My own kitchen I had fitters in as wanted it all done as close to perfect and as quick as possible as Christmas was looming. Have fitted them for friends and the units/...

spare blade for stanley no 8 plane

A well used iron is usually a sign of a well used plane which normally means it works well for its intended purpose. Any of the brands mentioned would work well.

Countertop cutout fail and how to correct it?

Try some practice cuts in the offcut. You have to feed much slower than you expect to keep it vertical you also need to get used to feeding very straight. The feeling of it pulling you in one direction was it telling you the blade was bent. If you try and wrestle the saw to cut straight or...

    Strange Wine?!

That would be like taking some white sliced bread and cheddar cheese, I miss regular trips to France and being able to get really solid wine at decent prices. Sun, baguette, cheese, maybe some saucisson and a nice Cote rotie

    End grain chopping board

Appreciate the ask - but with a rationale of kinder on knife edges - edge grain boards are very close in performance in a home kitchen - and a good edge grain will be better than a poor end grain Plus has benefits of being simpler to make, if you make yourself cheaper and I know which of mine I...

Kitchen making and extraction hood height

When having my kitchen fitted I spent a bit of time working it out with the power of the hob and then keeping it out of my eyeline (I’m 6’3)- settled on 800mm above cooktop but I have the fan in-line with the ducting rather than in the hood so I could have something with a lot of power (1300 cu...
