How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

Yes, this is exactly what I'll be doing when I install the vice later. My garage floor is too soft for this (chipboard panels over foam insulation) and as I'm selling the house, I don't want to make a pig's ear of the driveway, so a bench leg will be my best bet.

    Sharpening

I understand now, thanks, David! I'll report back my findings when I get time, though I'm sure it'll be of no surprise to you, given all your experience with this method.

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

It's been soaking in WD40 all night and all of today so far. The vice turned up, so I'll give it a go when I can be bothered to enter the sauna (the garage). I'm not going to be damaging the shaft; I'm not going crazy with the hammer or anything, and the bearing puller is due to arrive later...

    Sharpening

Thanks for the clarification, David. I have since found and read a few of your articles that further enlightened me on the method. I'm intrigued to try this out. Having only need of one stone and a buffer is very appealing. This wouldn't add much time or cost to the method I'm used to and seems...

    Sharpening

My first introduction to proper sharpening was at a woodworking course about 15 years ago by a chap called Bruce Luckhurst in Ashford. Lovely chap, excellent teacher. In a week, he taught us how to tune up old planes and chisels, sharpen them, dimension stock, cut dovetails and make and veneer a...

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

Hi mate, they're 6201 RS bearings. The interior diameter is 12mm -- I was thinking of just using a 13mm socket: the shaft they have to go on are also only 12mm deep. That said, you got me thinking and after a bit of searching, I found these: SKF - PSM 142030 A51 - Bushing - Straight Bushing...

Thanks Deema. I'll give that a try when it comes to putting the new ones on.

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

You're probably right with doing all of them... but laziness... ;) And yep. I've got the stubborn one soaking as we speak. I'll have the vice from Amazon tomorrow so that should make it a bit easier than my current hold-in-the-tabletop.

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

Thanks for all the solutions, everyone. I thought a similar approach would work but as a newb to these kinds of things, I was nervous about ballsing it up. Using the methods outlined here, I've managed to get one off: I drilled a hole in my flimsy OSB tabletop and supporting 2x4, then used a...

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

I don't have one of those, but I'll add it to my shopping list options :) Yes, I already made a start. I managed to knock the proud shaft level with the bearing with a minor tap with my lump hammer. I don't have a vice currently, and no pin/drift/etc so I couldn't get much farther than that...

Bad habits. I know I shouldn't, but I still do...

Sad that nothing's changed. I guess the hobbyist market is just too small for them to care.

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

Thanks for the advice, Lorenzi. As I don't have a vice at the moment, I was facing having to buy one or the puller. It's good to know either approach is likely to work. They've been soaking in WD40 for a while now, and it'll be at least another day before I have the vice/puller. Hopefully...

    First Guitar build

That looks to be a lovely job. Well done, mate. I've built a few electrics in the past but haven't dared tackle an acoustic yet. They seem far more complex for my comparative skill level.

    Axminster Workshop AW2606B Bandsaw

I'd say you made the right choice. I think I looked at that one. Was it the one you posted in my bandsaw thread? I don't think it's worth the risk for a cheaply-made far-eastern machine with proven problems. If they offered a 3-year warranty, then perhaps... But as far as I remember reading, the...

Bad habits. I know I shouldn't, but I still do...

I hear you. When I get my move over and done with and my workshop set up again, I'm going to try and be more relaxed about the whole thing. Enjoy the journey more, as it were, rather than worrying about the end product. I don't think there's anything wrong with starting again. I've had a...

How to get stubborn bearings off bandsaw guide posts?

Hi all, So I took delivery of my new-to-me SCM S45 bandsaw recently and I need to replace some of the bearings. The lower ones are basically seized, or at the very least, too gritty to spin freely. I've got some new, replacement bearings on the way. However, I just tried to remove the bearing...

Bad habits. I know I shouldn't, but I still do...

One of mine is over-thinking and over-analysing. It's as though I need the perfect solution just to start. I think through a given project too much, and sometimes put myself off by all the ways it could go wrong. That's one of the reasons why I gave up woodworking for so long: I wasn't...

What wood to use for Paul sellers workbench

I have a like-dislike relationship with Cosman's videos. I find him quite smug at times, but there are a number of videos of his I've learned a lot from. Yes, his business is to sell educational material and tools, and that comes first, but I find that if I skip over that, there's plenty for me...

    Buying a heavy bandsaw + 3 phase inverter/conversion

Definitely. I've still got the new ones coming. I bought a complete set, so I'll replace the existing ones, clean them up, and retain them for emergency replacements should I need them.
