Just seen that predictive text changed joiner to joker. Quite apt really! 😂👍🏻

    Carving chisels - starter advice

Good on you. Have a go. What’s the worst that can happen … plenty fire wood. I’m no expert carver, I served my time as a joker straight from school and after 30 years decided to have a go at carving. I’ve not found the time to have a proper go yet but in the next few weeks I’m hoping to have a...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Thanks John. I can sharpen as I spent hours and hours as an apprentice 30 years ago with an old joiner who used to make us spend every Friday afternoon doing it. It’s more of a time issue to get them all somewhere close but I’ll chip away at them myself until they’re all done by which time no...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Well we get North West tonight so we must be! 😂 I know how to sharpen so it’s not a case of learning it’s just a case of time but I’ll crack on one at a time. 👍🏻

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

It’s not that I don’t have time to sharpen them as such it’s just that I’ve got 20 plus that need ‘grinding’ back to the correct angles and then sharpening. Keeping on top of them once they are all in the ball park will be fine

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

Good evening - don’t shoot me down!! So I’m going to start having a go at carving. I’ve bought a few carving chisels and gouges. I’m looking for somewhere/someone to professionally sharpen them all. Ideally in the north west (Cheshire) but if it’s a business where they can be...

    18v tool brand choice

The reason a lot of joiners use Makita is because they brought out the lithium ion batteries long before Dewalt. Once you go down a route with the batteries it’s hard to change. I personally use Makita but have used Dewalt and I don’t think there is anything in it. As mentioned above I didnt buy...

    Engraving

Thanks Cobbs. Yes I have bought the letter carving in wood book by Chris Pye and also the woodcarving tools, equipment and materials book by Chris Pye. Just flicking through them both when I get a moment. I think I now just need to get cracking and learn as I go and I also think I will learn...

    Oak front door

I too have stopped making them and always turn them down now. Nothing but trouble. Mortice, tenoned, wedged, glued and draw dowelled with 19mm oak dowels and still movement. I should add that was using the best grade kiln and air dried (not on the same doors!) so I certainly won’t be making...

    Letter carving chisels

Thanks Christeve Yes I’d certainly be interested in some gouges. Drop me a PM if it’s easier. The set of new Marples I have are the same as this I think (would have to double check as it’s a while since I’ve opened the box but I can’t see they would have changed the set they sell)...

    Letter carving chisels

Thanks both. Interesting video. I keep hearing about Chris Pye’s book but it seems hard to get hold of for a reasonable amount - if anyone is selling one please let me know. I will also have a search for Charles H Haywood book now. I have plenty chisels but they’re all Mortice or bevel edge...

    Letter carving chisels

Morning all. This thread starting off in jigs etc as I was looking to do these with a ‘router’. I have now decided I am going to have a stab at doing these by hand. I’ve over 30 years as a joiner so I can use a chisel but carving is new to me. Has anyone got any recommendations/links for a few...

    Engraving

This has probably ended up being in the wrong category now as it’s escalated to hand tools but has any got any links or examples or recommendations of the chisels required to get started.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a few chisels to start me off at letter carving?

House name on a green oak porch. 150mm section size so I’d say each letter would be approx 40mm

Open to hand carving. Never done it but been a joiner for 30 years so I’m capable of using a few chisels. Anyone local to Cheshire that would like to give me a few pointers or a crash course?

    Engraving

Hi all. I am looking to do some engraving in some green oak. Letters mainly but occasionally numbers. I’ve not got a CNC machine but I do have a palm router and a 1/2 router. Has anyone had any joy with any jigs? I’m not a fan of the really ‘rounded’ jigs that are available. Thanks in advance.
