    What kind of axe?

What about an Arbortech Allsaw? Not many people know about these amazing power tools, but they have tungsten-tipped teeth and you can hire them. Perfect for cutting through roots.

    Fixing a coffee table top

Buttons are obviously the considered, conventional choice that allow for movement but stop cupping, but the chances are you'll be fine with pocket hole screws for that size of top. If it's for yourself, I'd do it that way and learn one way or the other!!!!!! There is a bit of movement in a...

    3 String Cigar Box

I got mine on eBay for £10 I think. It turned out to be made of cardboard, but that doesn't seemed to have mattered much (but then mine was made for me, not as a commission!!!).

    3 String Cigar Box

Very easy for an amateur. Ok, so I'm quite an experienced woodworker, but I really could not believe how successful it turned out to be. I copied the fretting from another guitar. Seems to work ok. Our article had some references to books worth reading. It was one of the most enjoyable projects...

    Amateur making an oak table

I agree with everyone else who has advised against a solid top. Gaps are good, and chamfered make them look more intentional, as someone else suggested. Varnish won't help much. If you oil it, make sure you also finish the underside of the tabletop to equalise moisture changes. Wider slats...

    12mm tapered plug cutter

Don't Veritas make tapered plug cutters? If so look at Brimarc or Axminster sites.

    Metal Inlay

The other thing to consider is to mix metallic 'powder' with epoxy resin and let that into the router circles, then sand back. You won't get as shiny an effect as with gold leaf though.

Welcome, Jamey. Good to hear from people your side of the Pond interested in wooden planes.

    3 String Cigar Box

I built one, and featured it in a previous issue of British Woodworking. Was surprisingly easy and fun, and it even has a pick-up. There are a few books on the subject, but you could do it from our article. It was in Feb/Mar 2013, BW34. We may have a back issue or you can buy a digital version...

    Yew

I hate the idea of people being discouraged from making projects because they think they'll be judged by other woodworkers, when in reality everyone else will think you are amazing! The walnut works well with the yew.

    Thewoodhaven website....gone?

Doesn't look good from what I see, which would be sad because Tom worked hard to do his thing. It's really hard setting up on one's own, and I hope he's ok and wish him well. He kindly gave us some help when we set up British Woodworking. I've emailed him and will come back if I hear any news...

    Yew

Sounds great, Marcros. The yew will go a gorgeous deep brown colour. I wouldn't have thought it's an easy species to find a pair, and I'd favour matching it with an English species, perhaps bog oak, which would be good contrast without too much figure. But walnut will be great I'm sure. Good...

General opinion on powered vs non-powered respirators?

Sorry, but not sure. The body of the mask has 7502 on it. I think the filters are 2512 or something. Perhaps the 7502 is slightly newer??? It is blue/grey rubber with two filters and a fixing that goes over your head and around your neck. I've found it the most comfortable, with the fewest...

    small workspaces, show me yours!

I had a caravan for a while as a timber store. Very dry. It was superb and only cost me £150. Even came with a gas stove and fridge and loo, so doubles up in other ways as well.

    Bosch wireless charging

I don't doubt what you say, Mick. Rightly or wrongly, I'm not sure if that will alter the impact this idea will have. I don't think the industry will ever have a universal system. Why would they?

    Bosch wireless charging

Of course. But why if they think they can devise something more revolutionary that puts them a leap rather than a small step ahead of the competition?

    Bosch wireless charging

I think the big advantage will be in workshops and factories, where woodworkers will be able to place their cordless tools on a pad for constant charging, without ever worrying about them running out of charge, or having to take out the battery. I think it's a game changer because I think many...

    Bosch wireless charging

Bosch talked about their Foreign Objects Detection software/mechanism, and showed that the magnetic field will only operate when an appropriate battery pack is in place, and only where the pack is sitting. Phones were put on the chargers and nothing happened. I left the conference intrigued...

    small workspaces, show me yours!

You don't need much to store wood dry and well ventilated. Keeping timber out of the shed is crucial to survival in a small space I think.

    Planecraft

I have a copy somewhere. If I can find it I'll take a look. It's possible we sold it at the David Stanley auction to raise money for the Help for Heroes Veterans' Workshop!!!
