Post a photo of the last thing you made

Stig, looks really nice and specially like the finish and the rings that you cut in the bottom. Nice touch. What did Jason think of it? 🤔🤔🤔

    Resin use

Pete, many thanks for informative reply! I once read someone saying, 'Life's too short to be turning crap wood'! Or something similar. I think my problem is, 1. I'm relatively new to turning 2. Keen to turn wood from home 3. As the tree was dead, I presumed it would be dry enough to turn. Some...

    Resin use

Pete, I might be jumping in on the thread but I've just turned a small bowl from an old peach tree and it's full of beetle or bora holes/tunnels. I've tried a few methods of filling them in but haven't had too much success. Today I used pva glue mixed with some light coloured saw dust. Tends to...

    I've cancelled my subsription

Mike, I can only assume how much time is spent reading, checking & moderating the entries on the site/forum. Certainly not a task that I would want to do myself and therefore thank you and the team for sorting this out. I don't even have the time to read all the threads each day so God knows how...

Can a mobile base for a bandsaw have just 2 wheels?

Domingos, pleased to hear that you have purchased a bandsaw, I'm still looking. I think that Fergie 307 has the right idea. I've seen it on the Makita bandsaw & some table saw's as well. Gives you a more solid base so that it won't move around. I'm inclined to think that with 4 wheels if you...

    Adjustable vs Fixed Spanners

I'm a big fan of my Bahco adjustable. Ideally use a ring or open ended shifter if possible but the Bahco has been brilliant over the years. Thin jaws that often get into tight places like on bicycle hubs for example. Handy having the etched mm on the side as often use this to get the right sized...

Is this too big for my lathe?

Noted! I had heard that they could be risky but hadn't seen/read the UK government report. Thanks Shan.

Is this too big for my lathe?

Cheers for that. May go down this road but as everyone points out, spin on low speed which I don't have that option unfortunately. Will attempt to get it as balanced as can by probably using some of the things you pointed out. 👍👍👍

Is this too big for my lathe?

Take on-board the advice. Still attempting to get it balanced as can't slow down the speed of lathe (see above). The lathe is however heavy and bolted to a concrete floor but I know from doing smaller bowls that even slightly out of kilter it feels a bit scary due to the speed. Cheers Shan

Is this too big for my lathe?

Not as yet. Leaving it to dry out a bit and have noticed a small crack developing. Still haven't managed to get it centred as yet. Tried out a potential band saw recently but it kept tripping out so didn't purchase same. Some of the smaller bowls I've made from the same trunk have started to...

Is this too big for my lathe?

Paul, unfortunately I don't have the option to slow down the speed. It's an old lathe with a 3 phase motor and have tried a VFD which didn't work. Kept cutting out all the time, so just got the pulley system. Don't know what the rpm's are but I know it's way too fast for what I had in mind. Cheers

    5minute epoxy

I like the bowls and plates that you've made but one thing if you want them to be food safe and you use epoxy I wouldn't have thought it the best idea. I've used pva on some off cuts of plywood and it was really easy to work with and strong. But I like your idea and I've been thinking about...

    Band saw

I've also been looking to buy a bandsaw and going to try out an Electra Beckum 450 today as it happens. The height of the cut is 300mm and falls into the biggish range if I'm not mistaken. It is however 3 phase and will admit that I'm not familiar with bandsaw's so could be a good learning...

Post a pic of something you have recycled

The school across the road from us had discarded some stuff from the gym and being close to home I made a table. Forget the name of it (horse?) but it was missing a couple of sections like the top padded one but rigged up a fluro light, some wheels and a red perspex top. Been handy as well.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I can't say as new to the turning game but what I've found out so far is that chestnut is nice to turn and sands up well. Pine not too exciting but liked the eucalyptus for patterns. However I'm still trying to finish some wood a mate gave me but do not know the name of it. Fairly red...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Been playing around with a bit of eucalyptus today and wasn't expecting too much of it but turned ok and apart from a couple of cracks sanded fairly easy. It's very small tho. Definitely be on the lookout for more.

Is this too big for my lathe?

Lefley, that's a novel idea. Cheers. I don't have a router but looking for a bandsaw at the moment. In the meantime I'm leaving the blank to dry out a bit and then once I've got the bandsaw can sort it out. Regards Shan

Is this too big for my lathe?

Yep, screw on. But only tightens when turning so no problem with it detaching.

Is this too big for my lathe?

Sorry about last post I got the name's mixed up.

Is this too big for my lathe?

David. Thanks for this but unfortunately your assumption is way off the mark. Blank is way off centre in thickness and circumference. I plan to true it up but haven't got a bandsaw yet. Hopefully get one soon. Cheers
