Hacksaws: How to choose 'em, how to use 'em, + other "stuff"

AES A great thread and very well done especially with all the details. Must have taken an age to write it up but I think it's really useful for new comers and others who think they probably know it all but can always revisit certain aspects. Oddly enough I can't remember who told me but I also...

    Evolution mitre saw table inserts

John. All sorted. Finally removed the insert. As explained above all you need to do is lift the back tab out and then slide it out as there's tabs on the side. I removed the fence and used a small flat screw driver to pry it out. I'll attach a photo that might help. Good luck with it. Shan

    Evolution mitre saw table inserts

Jonhwa, how did you get on? Have you managed to remove the orange plastic insert? I've tried to get mine out (same saw) but no luck. As it has split I want to replace it with a wooden insert but ideally didn't want to break the original one in-case it can't be done. There appears to be a little...

    Oil for new gear lathe?

Fergie, that looks like a proper good old fashioned lathe. I'm not into working with metal, just wood but can certainly appreciate that it looks like a fine beast. Shan

    Pallet Wood

I think pallets are great. Used for shelving and building racks to support thing's. Sure some are better than others but I find that theyare are great source of free wood to get creative with. My main problem is that I don't have a vehicle large enough to cart them around otherwise I would have...

End Seal for seasoning wood for turning

Alex That's great advice. So much easier to turn as well. I inherited two large trunks of chestnut from the neighbours and being new to turning I was as pleasedas punch and carved up one and knocked out a few bowls. Unfortunately some have started to warp but wish I had known sooner about rough...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Made a Longworth chuck today and tried it out to see if it was fit for purpose. Held the bowl ok until I went forwards and the whole thing detached from the spindle. Caught it just in time from falling on the floor. As I don't have a router the arcs were drilled first then I cut out as much as...

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

I'm not too sure about a lot more wiser, probably just a bit more cautious. I'm with you on the slower speeds, would be great for big stuff before it's trued up. Also for drill large holes. Now I see what you mean by Cole jaws. Would make things a lot easier as the widest that mine open to is...

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

Phill I took a photo of the chuck and will attach it. The jaws have a number etched on the side, 191. I've 2 set's, excuse my terminology but 1 set for internal and external clamping. Oh Alex mentioned plywood cole jaws. What are they? I'll search later but I'm using cork at present. Seems...

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

Alex, I didn't know too much about buying a lathe but someone told me to go for a heavy 3 phase model. So fortunately the 3 phase part was simple as I've got the well pump on 3 phase and were a few on offer at various prices (2nd hand obviously). But settled on one weighing in at over 200kgs...

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

I'll have a butcher's tomorrow at the chuck, I'm pretty sure it has some ref no. It was made in Checkslovakia I think. When you say 'soft jaws' are you meaning aluminium? Seems they work for beer and money. Cheers

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

Phill, I like your advice on how you managed to arrange your chuck with dovetail jaws. I purchased a lathe here in Portugal and the spindle size is 1 &1/2" 8tpi and been a nightmare trying to get anything that size. Fortunately it came with a 3 & a 4 jaw chuck but theyleave nasty indentations...

Buying jaws for 3 jaw chuck

Alex, I think you dodged a bullet. I purchased a 2nd hand lathe here in Portugal and the spindle size is 1& 1/2" 8tpi. Thought is was a standard size but didn't realise that it was almost impossible to buy anything that size. Fortunately it came with a 3 &4 jaw chuck and I can use the...

How did you learn to turn?

I'm pretty much self taught. Like others have mentioned I made some things in the woodwork class at school but that was about 40 odd years ago but the seed was sown. So I got myself a 2nd hand lathe here in Portugal, purchased a set of gouges new and a couple of other things such as a face...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

A couple of bowls for the collection. Made from peach wood. Bit wonky in parts but the grain helped it along. Few cracks and some beetle holes but filled with a mix of PVA and saw dust and a bit of wood filler here and there.

    PVA or CA

Funnily I'm having similar problems, cracking and warping combined with wood bora holes in to boot. I'm pretty sure that no filler will arrest any cracking as mentioned above and the movement of the wood when it dries is really strong, too strong for any fillers to stop. I've tried both pva and...

    Live centre suggestions

Stig. I might be slightly wrong in my detail here but if you're piece that you screw the live centre isn't flat it tends to put stress on the live centre but out of balance. Might be worth checking out because I remember a blank that I was working on and the live centre didn't engage in it...

    Resin use

I think this will be the label to apply should I ever get round to shifting a few bowls or anything else that I make/turn from wood and could potentially be used in the kitchen. I'm finishing things off with either a linseed and beeswax mix or mineral oil and beeswax. I think that any residual...
