Got myself a nice little bargain yesterday

Good score! 🖒🖒🖒 I see that you have an Irwin blade. I've had the same blade in my hack saw for year's. Find them a great blade but haven't tried the Sandvik as others have mentioned.

Any one made a sharpening jig for this or similar machine

Dusty Ears, have you tried or thought about getting some zirconium belts/pads for the sander? They don't tend to heat up like the normal belts. Just a thought as I'm using themin my belt sander for sharpening.

Any one made a sharpening jig for this or similar machine

I might be a bit late to the thread but I'm using my belt sander turned up side down with zirconium belts. Mainly sharpening bowl gouge but use it on other gouges as well and never gets too hot and seems to put a pretty sharp wedge on the gouge's. Should I need to sand any wood I simply take it...

    Scotch Brite Grey

Yep. Bit hard to see but the grits are on the back of the pads.

    Scotch Brite Grey

It seems Lidl doesn't adhere to the colour system of grades. Hard to tell the differences.

    Scotch Brite Grey

Keith, that's good to know. I purchased a pack from the mighty Lidl recently which were different colours. It's Velcro backed pads for use with an angle grinder or drill. Will try out between finish's as others have mentioned. Does speed make a difference? As like sanding, not too fast? Cheers Shan

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Been playing with fire, but didn't burn a digit...fortunately! I don't know what the wood is but it's not pine. If anyone knows please advise as I'm keen to identify it. Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi? Seems some different opinions on the name. But Sugi is the name of the Japanese cedar I think that...

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

Here is another link. They are based in Lisbon and although I've never visited the shop I did buy an electric planer that was a proper brand and good price. Free delivery over €50?? I think. Bit like Screwfix. Unfortunately Brexit has put a stop on them selling to Portugal. Ferramenta.pt - A...

    Bahco square

I like the brand, I've got an adjustable spanner from Bahco and its great. The marks on my square are starting to wear out so this looks like a good buy. Cheers

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

So true. The last one I did today came out pretty good. I'm not going right out to the corners so easier. The walnut one's I made today bit harder than the cherry ones. Cheers

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

Thanks for the encouragement, must add I did a couple of walnut platters today & I'm getting the hang of it. Not going right out to the corners so easier. For tool's and equipment re. Lathe I went for a 2nd hand lathe here in Portugal. Living just out of Porto in the north. Not too sure about...

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

I struggle with getting the tool's razor sharp and the delicate touch is elusive but good advice, cheers.

How to get proper joints to pop when finishing off?

Clogs, have you tried an arts supply/artists shop to buy shellac? I eventually found some here in Portugal and had been looking for ages. Managed to get some flakes and have made my own. It's wonderful stuff not just for finishing but can mix with saw dust & use as a filler and sealing as well...

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

Dave, thanks for the advice. I started off with a 5/8" bowl gouge then a 1/2" bowl gouge. Finished with a 3/4" round nose scraper. Didn't touch it with a carbide tip. Was difficult on the corners especially not getting any catches. In the end I didn't get the perfect curve but the guy seemed...

    Pyrography set in Aldi

I would think so. I'm using an 18 watt soldering iron. Not ideal but I think that the bits are important. I think copper is the best conductor of heat so this could help and the design also. The soldering iron is not the easiestto draw with.

    Pyrography set in Aldi

I think that I've seen a similar pyrografia set in the mighty Lidl recently here in Portugal but didn't buy it. Have since used my 18watt soldering iron and made a couple of bits for it from brass. I've finally got a logo for my work, mainly bowl's. Pretty simple, 9 dots in a grid then play join...

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

Meant to say. The top and bottom fotos are a platter that has been finished...not by me tho!

How to avoid tearout on turned platter?

Help! I've been asked if I can make a platter and if goes well could be my 1st paid job. So want to get it spot on. Have been given the wood, cherry and all cut to size. It's square however and I don't want to take any chunks off the corners. Measures 340mm square but 480mm opposing corners...

    Angle grinders, managing vibration

I think gloves are probably the way to go. Even cycling fingerless ones with the gel pads might help if you have some. My own 115 grinder is just a cheapy and isn't too bad for vibration but I bought a Bosch wood carving disc and the thing must be slightly out of balance. Whizzing round at high...
