    Useful knots to learn.

"On Rope" (Padgett et al): https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=7232804827 Superb book. Might even still be in print. One I had as a kid (Scouts, etc.): https://www.abebooks.co.uk/Browns-Knots-Splices-Complete-Work--Revised/22485843350/bd And if you want to know how to do a...

    3/8th ratchet

I have a Halfords 3/8" stubby rachet - it's probably my favourite after my 1/2" Norbar torque wrench. I don't remember it being expensive and the quality is pretty good - nice feel, well chromed, etc.

FTAGH Guillotine, potentially free to a good home. Milton Keynes

Yup, that's the badger. You're spot-on. I had the cutting stick replaced the last time I got the knives done on mine. When it went last year it wasn't close to needing replacement - as you say, 8 possible surfaces. My caving club used it to self-publish a paperback book (roughly 100 pages), few...

Wot ee said. Your delivery was only slightly more than 50% of what you apparently paid for.

FTAGH Guillotine, potentially free to a good home. Milton Keynes

I gave a smaller one away last year (via the forum), which was probably from the same manufacturer (very similar detailing). It was brilliant, if a little scary. They are probably unsuitable for use in anything other than private ownership now, because of the safety requirements for guillotines...

    SIP 01486 Rip Fence replacement

Found my original write-up (and the pics are there too): Broken bandsaw fence lever - I think I fixed it! [later] Mine is a SIP 1486. I have found the fence itself (the extrusion), but I think I threw out the clamping lever and sliding saddle. It's still a pretty acceptable little saw, and...

    SIP 01486 Rip Fence replacement

Hi Mark, I'll have to check the model # of mine, but it's a SIP, the fence handle snapped (thin white metal casting) and I repaired it successfully. Search on me and bandsaw fence as I'm pretty sure I wrote up the repair - M4 machine screws added as reinforcement for a lot of Araldite, IIRC...

Dowel plates? Sensibly priced, & not a transatlantic purchase?

As subject: I am planning my new bench top and would like to have a dowel plate(s) inset, but I haven't so far found anything here at a sensible price. I've been a bit surprised that they aren't more common (but my Google search terms might be poorly chosen). I am wondering about making one...

    Using Router on Acrylic?

Tufnol is also (supposed to be) self-lubricating in many applications. Very useful stuff. IIRC, it's the same chemistry as Paxolin, used for electronic circuit boards in times past, except that it has a fabric strengthener/reinforcement. tufnol sheet - Google Search I noticed Trent Plastics...

    Woodworking Mornington Crescent

Dear Boris, When I'm calling yooo... ... ooo... ... ooo... ... I keep getting that flippin' Covid tracing app telling me not to get anywhere near. Kisses (blown from a distance, obviously), Mrs T.* *No not that one. Don't be daft - she's long dead.

Possibly so, DW, but your comments are useful nonetheless!

Disaster with a trend diamond stone

Apparently excessive pressure can "liberate" the diamond chips from the surface. I think I was once told that the chips are spread on the surface, followed by an electroplating process to build up metal around them to keep them in place. Physical force can crack the plating surrounding the...

    Peanut Connecting System

<Spock>Fascinating</Spock> <McCoy>It's a joint, Jim, but not as we know it</McCoy> Hoping Peter Millard joins this discussion soon, as I know he has tried various KD systems, including the Festool one for Domino slots and, IIRC, the Lamello Zeta ones too. I haven't yet used either. There's one...

    Woodworking Mornington Crescent

Flippin 'eck, go away from yer desk for a few minutes, and when you come back... Cigar spokeshave? (obviously staying well away from any diagonals). And look what I found just lying around at the back of the shed. It needed a new needle and I had to take the yellow duster out of the horn, but...

    New forum format

I'm sure it just needs time to bed-in. It's extraordinarily difficult to prototype this sort of thing off-line - you only really find out the issues once it's live. I agree about a bit of warning, however - would have done no harm to have let us know this was happening. That said, my avatar has...

    Gandhi's glasses

On the BBC web site: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-53706809 A friend of mine used to edit the Bristol bit of the site (not sure if he still does), and he has a wicked sense of humor. I really hope he wrote this piece... So in short, a Bristol Auction house has been given a...
