Measuring machine noise, effective soundproofing, etc.

Warning: If you don't like complexity, or long explanations, please don't waste time reading this. There's a thread going on spiral cutter blocks on planer/thicknessers, and one of the issues, especially for us amateurs, has to be the machine noise - are spiral blocks actually quieter? I think...

Dud & Pete save the series

Dud, Pete, Barry Humphries? What's not to like? Anyway two masterful bits of music from Dud and the clothes shop sketch (the impressario didn't seem as funny as other versions, for some reason, but hey). Happy Christmas anyway! E. PS: As one old lag to another, did you notice the vignetting...

    Merry Christmas

And to you, sir. Just this morning we have had a pair of males dogfighting all round our tiny urban garden, all over the one nestbox they seem to like. And our solitary wren has taken an interest, and the resident robin has chased all of them. We've gone weeks with hardly any small birds at...

Dud & Pete save the series

Tragic that our lads are no longer able to avail themselves of this sort of help. https://youtu.be/z7YRoY709ws Young Geoffrey should be reminded of this event every time he commentates... :-)

    Confused

Oh, that cheered my morning! I was Toolstation's second customer this morning. 0715h: I got all the way there, all organised with a short code for the shopping list, got out of the car, slapped my back pocket to find it EMPTY. I'd left my wallet on my desk. Sigh. To be fair, they made up...

Help needed to straighten stud wall

Can't see the image for some reason, Roger. The filename shows up though.

    Elu 96 Router

Can you put me down as second in line, please, if Robin changes his mind? Unlikely, but hey, if you don't ask... :-)

    Sharp recipe book

Bzzt! It was Thorn (as in Thorn EMI!) But it does have a Christmas pud recipe. Only drawback: suggests using only Stout (not spirits) and one can guess why! Will type it in if you want it. E.

    Sharp recipe book

I think we have a Sharp microwave book from the mid 1980s. Came across it a week or so back the recipe for steam pud. I'll go look...

    Kitchen Sink

I remember those nasty clips on mine, even though it was close to 20 years ago! But I did think (back then) that it was thicker SS than average - perhaps they've economised since we got ours.

    are these the same tool

Woodywoodwood: You might be right, but I'd love to see the contract between Kingfisher and DeWalt, if that's the case. It would make fascinating reading, and introduce nightmarish post-sales issues: "But it's your tool, you made it! Why won't you honour the warranty???" Etc., etc. In my limited...

Why is it not OK to upload sketchup files ?

There is also a security issue too. I've never heard of SU files harbouring malicious code, but at work we're pretty anal about what we allow people to upload to our own servers (we do a lot with web technology for clients). "Better safe than sued" is a good maxim, perhaps. 3D Warehouse is...

    Kitchen Sink

Franke here. I replaced twin round sinks (disaster area!) with a Franke that was just one big sink and drainer. You can get a large washing up bowl in it "portrait" (rather than "landscape", if you see what I mean), so there is room alongside to rinse things, but still enough room in it to get...

    Lidl clamp quality query

To be pedantic, that sounds like a manufacturing defect: cycling the mould too fast, so the injected plastic cools before it's had enough time to close up properly. But from your pics it looks like a weak point (a design flaw, as you say), where that screwed-on plate joins the main part of the...

Is someone having a laugh .....

Heck! Round here that's not even a single shot with Sloth froth for that price. Yak foam? Dream on! E. PS: "Please Miss, I got one of these for Henry, our hamster and he likes it very much, but he went in and now he won't come out again, can you help? "Hamsters often sleep throug the...

    Chapel window fastener suggestions?

Tom, Those are rather a delight to the eye! I have a variation on what Andy has suggested fitted to the skylight above our stairwell. Also from Ironmongery Direct, I used one of these: https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/product/screw-jack-skylight-stay-300mm-polished-brass-686808 So far...

    "Sound of WHAT?"

I should think the FBI want to give them a medal! Brilliant stuff, really good catch!

    Track saw ... drift.

I struggle to slide my 3m rail around on anything - never yet used clamps with it. If anything it's too sticky. It's Makita BTW, and supposed to be not as sticky as the Festool ones.

    Lidl vaccuum

Mine has the PTO too. It gets building rubble, big and little wood shavings, sanding dust (from plaster and wood), all sorts of other things like filings from grinding, etc. I have to remember to check the bag, as the suction doesn't really diminish until it's really too full and ready to tear...

    Rutlands router table

Good choice - you'll be really pleased you did! Even though I haven't used it for quite a few years, I kept the Ikea shelf (600x600) that I used to use, simply because having it dead flat with nothing in the way was so handy, and there will inevitably be some occasion when I do need it again...
