    Lathe Light

Disclaimer: I'm not a turner. But I am interested in task lighting (for the bandsaw, drill press, etc.), so I have a related question to you good folks who have LED lights: Lighting LEDs are commonly pulsed at fairly high frequency, in order to save power (although not all driver circuits do...

    M16.1 Tap UPDATE

[edit - I think Aidan has nailed it, but just in case...] Nice job! The clips look a bit special - I'd start with a good chandlers. They remind me of stuff Jack Holt used to sell decades ago (for dinghies). I haven't sailed for many years, so I have no idea if they still carry the range they...

    Library shelves

One tip, if using Tonk strip, don't skimp and use the cheap clips. We had several shelves fall under the weight of encyclopedias and coffee-table books - surprisingly dense (the books I mean!). Around the start of lockdown we swapped out all the clips for the robust folded ones, available from...

    M16.1 Tap UPDATE

Yes to the above, but there was more to it: If permission is given it's evidently not stealing, and in some cases (one particular lens mount in my case, ideas got recycled into stuff made officially in the workshop. Years earlier, when I worked on a light engineering factory floor, apprentices...

    M16.1 Tap UPDATE

Given where you are, I'd seek out a scientific instrument makers near Oxford, or someone who does that for a college who can do a "furriner" for you. You can tap Perspex/polycarbonate, but it's not quite as easy as metal, because it's "sticky" and tends to grab the tap. For this application you...

    Biscuit Jointer

If they weren't intended to make some contribution to joint strength, then there would be no reason to align the biscuit's grain so it runs across the narrow axis. Mind you, I watched someone on youtube yesterday who plunged the jointer four times per hole. Yup, honestly. And he was relying on...

    Not shooting straight!

Mine are all like that too - I assume it has to do with the way they were cast. But no biggie - simply use the lateral adjusting lever so that the edge of the iron is perpendicular and check the result for squareness. Obviously experiment on something that doesn't matter!

Clarke CDP 351F (pillar drill) bearing info

Sounds like the motor capacitor, and nothing to do with chuck or bearings. They are easily obtainable and easily replaced, usually, but I'm not sure what the value should be. Take a look but do it with the plug removed from the socket and visible, just in case. E.

CamVac 63mm or upgrade to 100mm?

It's a question really of air velocity at the collection point and in the pipe. You should be able to contrive a lot of airflow at the router table, but it may not be a good idea to have a wider pipe, as the air will slow down, and not be able to carry as much dust with it. Personally I would...

Apple Mail icon...anyone know what it means ?

Ringtone: do try it with iOs 13.xx. You'll have a nasty shock. Learning OSes: I do have experience of many OSes* - it's no big deal as such. But iOs is not exposed to the user in any meaningful way - arguably one of the issues. Safety/security: neither Google/Android nor iOs are "safe" enough...

Apple Mail icon...anyone know what it means ?

Back in the day, when Hertz was #1 for car rentals, Avis came up with the now-famous motto, "We try harder". Honestly, there are a lot of good alternatives to Apple out there. There is nothing special about the Apple "ecosystem" that isn't available from others, notably Google. I used to think...

    Ash Dieback

You had me yelling, "No, just NOOOO!" at the screen" But it always goes better if you aim at the camera... ... mind you it remains a mystery why God allowed some Americans to have opposable thumbs.

    Interesting and sad...

Thank you. I wasn't aware of that, and the warning is appreciated. By the way, if this auction is open to just anyone, the assumption ought to be it's consumer. Thus whilst the buyer's premium (iniquitous, but that's another matter) attracts VAT, the hammer price arguably shouldn't (meaning the...

Apple Mail icon...anyone know what it means ?

I refer t'hon gentleman to my answer earlier: " Apple products are unspeakably wonderful and have no faults whatsoever that are so-blindingly-obvious-that-a ten-year-old-could-spot-them. Om."

Apple Mail icon...anyone know what it means ?

By the way, Apple's idea of disability seems to be merely people with a visual impairment of some sort, and even in that context it is little more than lip-service to "accessibility". Even though the keyboard is slightly larger than my old Android phone, it makes prolonged use for someone with...

Apple Mail icon...anyone know what it means ?

I have managed to replace all but two essential services on my iPhone SE with Google equivalents. So far, the Google ones are: Gmail, Google Calendar, Photos, and Google Drive (instead of iCloud). This gives me better functionality and some peace of mind. I do not use any of the Apple Pay or...

    Interesting and sad...

How sad. There is some nice kit in there, too. Wish I had time and space. Now who was it who used to have a Mandril as an avatar? Apparently there is a whole troupe of them in this auction, together, presumably, with a lot of printer's equipment ("wordworking machinery"). Some of the...

Base-plate screws for Titan TTB591ROU Router?

It's a Chinese, low cost item, so they are M4 most probably, or M5, and likely to be Phillips rather than Pozidriv head (although you can choose what you like - personally I'd go for Torx or Allen headed). The length is the only issue - sometimes they are a non-standard length. Easy enough to...

Should it be Sharp Out of the Box?

" ... blunt as a drunk windowcleaner." Never heard that one before. Outstanding.

Can you anneal brass like copper?

I have some thick-enough pieces of thin brass sheet (formerly striker plates for door locks), that I can re-purpose for new locks (which didn't come with the correct plates!), but I will need to flatten and re-bend them. I know that copper anneals pretty easily, just by heating and then...
