    Blueing salts

AndyT kindly donated some Camelia oil last time he was here - it's poised and ready :-)

    Blueing salts

This has been really informative and helpful - thanks everyone. I'm probably going to pass, and not attempt to "blue" the casting areas, but there are a couple of thumbwheels that that seem to have been oil-blued, and I might freshen those up a bit (have some 2-stroke :-) ).

    Currys/PCworld

I hear you, and I'm certainly no friend of the EU in any case. Companies doing the right thing have nothing to fear. Generally speaking, many organisations see personal data as an asset that can be monetized, either by selling it on or by trying to drum up extra sales. Only the latter will be...

    Currys/PCworld

It's a pan-EU thing. It obviously will have no effect on phishing attacks, etc. as they are intentionaly criminal from the outset. But it will (or should) make a difference to any firm with an EU presence (or EU assets), even the really big people.

    Currys/PCworld

[for the avoidance of doubt, what follows is THEORETICAL - no allegations are being made about any person or organisation] On the original thing, the stakes are about to be upped in the game, substantially, in favour of the consumer. Obviously, Curry's/PCworld have absolutely no right to...

    Blueing salts

I thought you could oil-quench too, to achieve some sort of blueing. I appreciate that might give only the colour but not any rust-resistance, but I was wondering if it was possible. As I said, I thought that was what our toolmaker used to do (no salts involved). Do I remember it incorrectly?

    Blueing salts

If it's that high, the temp wouldn't be good for the casting, either - tricky to both heat up and cool slowly afterwards, never mind the potassium nitrate - it doesn't sound like fun. I agree about Clickspring - found that doing earlier research on this. I think my toolmaker colleague years...

    Blueing salts

Thank you - that is very helpful. It's a #73 shoulder plane. I bought one in need of a lot of resto and cleaned it up, but that was largely polishing rust off. It's on its way to Steve Maskery at the moment, who picks up the baton from me of completing it. The work needed on that one is to do...

    Kity 419 help needed

I notice you've had no reply. Sorry - had a busy day - meant to reply earlier. I have the bits you need measuring, but it's too late to do it tonight. I'm not sure where they are, but I'll have a look and PM you when I can report back - might take a day or so. Cheers, E.

    Blueing salts

Looking at a chemical datasheet, it seems like blueing salts are potassium nitrate. I also understand the process (for doing clock hands, at least), but I wondered if anyone knows about what the chemical reaction is, and at what temperature it occurs? Thanks for any info - trying to do the...

Router woes: ANYONE ELSE WITH A T10, T11 or DW625 HAD THIS?

Thanks for the thought about using the T11's plunge lock. I rarely use really large cutters, and I've never used the plunge lock in the table, but just occasionally I get chatter with my large CMT multi-profile cutter (used for decorative mouldings). I'd put it down to poor stock choice and...

Router woes: ANYONE ELSE WITH A T10, T11 or DW625 HAD THIS?

Look for scuff marks - magnet on the grille at the back. And I think you may be worrying unnecessarily about the fragility of the magnet - I wouldn't use a lump hammer, obviously, but I suspect it's a rare earth magnet or two embedded in plastic. My Loctite fix has lasted, incidentally...

Incra Magnalock or Triton TWX7 for TRA001 router table build

FWIW, I've been eyeing up an Incra plate for some time, on the recommendations of Peter Sefton and Steve Maskery. If you go down that route, Peter also sells a ready-made template for the opening, made of thick MRMDF, intended for a bearing-guided cutter. I'll be doing that, too. My router is...

HSBC - Awesome start to the New Year (not)

It obviously wasn't consistent: I've a friend of some 40+ years who's entire career was with Midland/HSBC, and was told something similar - I remember our conversations at the time. I gave up on them when they were still Midland. I turned up at the counter to pay in a cheque with my new trading...

    Lost

The Design section here may help, too. Regarding curves, etc. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve, as usual. You don't get Bezier curves (you probably do with a plugin but not natively (or at least I haven't found them yet), but I did come across a neat plugin recently for...

Hacksaws: How to choose 'em, how to use 'em, + other "stuff"

As someone who bought one when Axminster had them on offer a few years ago, but hasn't yet used it, I consider myself duly warned (by both of you) :-)

Hacksaws: How to choose 'em, how to use 'em, + other "stuff"

AES: You mentioned Abrafiles in passing. I now guard the few I have left like my own children*. As long as I can get enough tension they're really good for curved cuts, especially in brass and aluminium. But unless some other manufacturer has sensed a market opportunity, I fear they're no...

HSBC - Awesome start to the New Year (not)

Around May 25th this year it will get far harder for them to play slopey shoulders, when the General Data Protection Regulation comes into force in English law. Think Data Protection Act on steroids. Dibs, I'm amazed you're taking it so calmly. I'd be incandescently angry. On the face of it, it...

Do you know what going on inside?

We used to have a pair of Amazon parrots. I miss them still as they are great companions when you work at home on your own. Charlie, the hen bird, in particular was very tame. She'd land on my shoulder sit and preen for a bit then either doze off or if bored run down my arm and deliberately...

    Confused

We have been known to drive one of the family cars around with a Post-It on the steering wheel that had "diesel!" written on it. Thankfully, on the occasion that caused the Post-It, the tank wasn't filled. And it wasn't me that time :-)
