    Hi folks, I'm back (devonwoody)

@AES: I think Xubuntu looks a lot like XP. Link above. Burn a DVD from the image to make it bootable. Don't copy the download to a DVD as that won't work. Then you can try it, or set up dual boot (keeping whatever you already have), or whatever you wish. BORING BACKGROUND STUFF: UNIX - the...

    Hi folks, I'm back (devonwoody)

I agree it is different, but Ubuntu, or at least Wine (WINdows Emulator) does allow you to run some Windows programs. For example, I run a couple of different versions of SketchUp Make, mostly without problems. There are versions of Ubuntu that look very much like old-style Windows. Xubuntu...

    British Seagull motor rebuild?

After making a twit of myself* over the non-existent condenser, I hesitate to comment further, but... ... in the past, I've found crimped fittings that are mechanically strong but that don't actually connect through the fitting to the wire itself, because the crimp was made badly. It's...

    British Seagull motor rebuild?

Be very systematic/methodical and check everything to a known-good state as you go. You seem to have narrowed it to the electrics, now you're finding the component that's broken (and there may be more than one. You should get a healthy spark, by holding the end of the HT lead (no plug cap nor...

    Makita Belt Sanders

I have the smaller 9911, which has been worked pretty hard and so far is going strong. A few points: 1. Whatever finish is on the boards will clog the belt before you sand past it. Don't consider trying this without DX, it'll just be a waste of belts. You can clean them well with crepe rubber...

    British Seagull motor rebuild?

From biking, I really like the NGK plug caps, the ones that don't take the Champion-style screw-on aluminium pimple on top of the plug. if the plug cap connects to the thread on the top of the spark plug directly it's one less thing to make a poor connection and weaken the spark. NGK caps also...

Anyone know who makes or sells this tool?

To save you wasted time searching, Carroll have gone too now. The rubber liner on my old Carroll drum has perished, so it'll be a Chinese set in due course, I fear. Shame about the pneumatic one - looks like a really handy idea.

    TENS anyone?

I tried one on NHS loan years ago when I first started getting arthritis in my neck and spine. It didn't really work, although by careful positioning I could make it raise my arm electrically by altering the current, which was really weird. I was advised to get one, but with my sort of arthritis...

    Maplin Drill

To echo that: mis-charged lithium ion batteries can be dangerous (risk of fire or worse). I don't get out much, but I have never seen a lithium ion system with a charger adapter (to the battery itseldf) and a separate mains adapter. It's more surprising because an 18V system will need probably...

Printing templates from SketchUp - how I did it

This is how I got an exact template to print from SketchUp this morning, so I could stick it down to a piece of ply and cut it out... I have no idea if this works for all versions of SU, nor what happens with the new Web version, but it might be helpful to someone. It works in SketchUp...

Resharpening Rebate Block Knives With A Diamond Stone?

I see you're in Swindon. If you have cause to come down to Bristol, there's a branch of Leitz Tooling here, where I get my TCT sawblades done, but they also sharpen planer knives and a range of other things. They are very good, and helpful. You will probably find they can regrind them without...

    Old pen plotter

Can't help with where, but the HP plotters used to be built like tanks, the only problem now being the HP-IB (GPIB/IEE 488) interface which is an 8-bit parallel bus and rather tricky to find adaptors for now to something like USB. That said, HP-IB/GPIB is still used in test & measurement...

American comedy, about the parks department of a small-town council. Better than most, too, IMHO.

Whatever happened to checking the colour of the plugs after thrashing it? Feelin' very old :-) E.

    Simple electro-petro-mechanical maths question?

Wot ee said. ^^^ Are you setting the timing up (advance)? I had a CB175* - same wasted spark system. It was a bit of a mare to sort out, as the timing adjustment involved removing the flywheel, IIRC - it was decades ago tho. E. *much nicer than the CD version - twin carbs and an extra gear.

    Tablesaw Calibration

Sorry - I think I might have been typing with work gloves on, or on my tablet. Anyway, "pivot SLIDER" is what I meant. Yes, there are two close-together bolts through the top, at each end of the saw. They each work a clamp for the slider that allows you to adjust the blade alignment...

[workshop lighting] LED substitutes for fluorescents

Thanks everybody. I have a feeling this ought to be a sticky thread - so much useful stuff. Right now I'm up to my neck in external masonry problems, trying to get finished to a deadline when I'll lose my scaffolding... so can't go shopping for new tubes. But it's all filed away for use as soon...

    Tablesaw Calibration

Thing #1: Loosen the pivot mounts at the far end from the operator, so the assembly can slide freely (but doesn't drop off, obviously!). With the blade fully raised and at 90 to the table, check just that far end, and lock off the pivot sloder ("trunnion") with the pivot set to the centre of its...
