Bandsaw dust extraction that actually works - 85% efficient!

It's probably a sentient life form in its own right by now... Could someone get that reporter lass to ask Maskery why he didn't rotate the topmost bit of pipe through 180 degrees and make a vertical slot in it, (so the blade teeth are actually inside the DX nozzle? That was Olly P-J's idea (on...

    MFT clamps.

I have a pair of Festool and a pair of Axminster threaded rail clamps. Both are excellent quality, and I couldn't choose between them, apart from the price (Axminster ones are slightly cheaper). The Festool ones live with the track saw, so get more use. I have had them loosen up, but it's...

    Duck tape or duct tape?

That would be why I couldn't remember it then :-) At least I got the date roughly correct.

    Duck tape or duct tape?

The first web browser I used (Mosaic, probably Firefox's earliest ancestor) ran on Unix workstations (PCs could barely be properly networked at the time), and IIRC, picture files (GIFs) couldn't be displayed until version 2 was released. Prior to that they did get used on bulletin boards in a...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Sorry SteL, I missed the context earlier - busy-ish day. But yes, it will probably go on warping/splitting roughly on a horizontal line where you have the handle (which is where the centre of the tree was). It depends on how much the moisture content and temperature of where you keep it differs...

Help with a stubborn double through mortise and tenon

Peter S. will wince, but my rule of thumb with M+T is entirely dependent on whether you can see the end of the tenon or not. If "not" then glue fixes most things! Your joint looks good, but... ...The first picture shows how close that pine board is to the heart of the tree. It will almost...

    Laser printers

Mine (B+W, not colour) is one of these: HP LaserJet 5000GN* The bottom tray takes a ream of paper, up to A3 size, and the lump on the back is a duplexer (instant double-sided printing). It's networked and happily prints from iPads, etc. with one of my Linux boxes acting as the Airprint server...

The possible connection tween red light bulbs and insanity.

I am puzzled by the "decorative" notches at the inner ends of the points. Might they have been for string/cord, so you could constrain the spread of the arms? I could see one pair of notches doing that, however the inner ones obviously wouldn't. Just decorative, or functional too?

    I love photography...

But that doesn't explain all the large feathers at the bottom of the trunk... :)

... and possibly Photoshop, but hey.

    Router as jointer

I used to do this, before I got a planer/thicknesser. Here are a few thoughts, in no special order: You can do up to 75mm height of stock in one pass. Well, that's the tallest 1/2" cutter I could find from Wealden. Their straight cutters are really good quality and the long one I have kept as...

    flat bottomed 25mm hole

Three things spring immediately to mind from your picture (1) Use an offcut aligned with the edge of the work and tightly clamped to it, to deal with the breakout. (2) Those look horrid quality Forstners (I have some just like them!). Buy a couple of decent ones to do this if it matters. Bear...

    Intelliplug

I would add that doing this with highly inductive loads, such as big-ish mains motors, requires careful design and is more expensive to make than the things intended for home use (yes, I do the same thing myself at the moment!). I intend to rebuild mine so the relay in the electronic switch is...

Replacement battery for a cordless 12volt electric drill?

Now is a good opportunity to decide what you want it for, because bigger does not mean better. If you are up ladders frequently, drilling into stone or hard brick, then obviously you need the equivalent of a chunky SDS drill, but battery powered. In this case, bigger does mean better - 18V or...

    Plane and Chisel Sharpening Tools

Regarding squareness, I have similar trouble, and it is annoying, especially doing rebate plane irons and similar, where you really do need to take a bit of care otherwise you compromise the plane's operation. These aren't solutions as such, but have helped me: If I am using my Tormekkalike...

    Land rover

A dashboard throttle was available for Series Landys, too. Not sure if it made it into the Defender era. Intended for when the power take-off was in use. BTW, I think you mean Anthony Quayle...

    Flu ***

Had mine on Monday, as part of another trip to the surgery for unrelated treatment. I get mine because I am on immunosuppressant drugs. Apparently the uptake is very high this year (can't imagine why), so get a move on if you want it...

    Land rover

Someone in a Nissan Micra drove into the offside rear corner of my landy when it was parked. I had to bend the light protector back into shape, and the corner needed a few pop rivets. The Micra was written off. I felt a bit sorry for the Micra owner, but on the other hand, the landy was...
