    Douglas Fir Timber

Ah! well it sounds as though he should know what he doing then, and if it's for his own house then it probably will be top stuff.

    Douglas Fir Timber

Yes it's durable, straight and fairly knot free but does contain resin pockets that will bleed, and can be a pita to machine sometimes due to splitting. I would want to know more about the quality of the timber though, if its only 8 months air dry it is presumably local grown stuff so won't be...

    Making large shaped cornices.

Luckily I found a stock cutter set that was pretty well a perfect match for what the designer wanted, but it did mean getting a new block to hold them both came from Whitehills. The new block is 80mm tall so its a bit to big to try and grind by hand and eye.

    Making large shaped cornices.

Nathan, each section in hindsight could have been longer but in this case I divided the overall by four, three pieces seemed a bit big and with more short grain at the ends so opted for four. The spindle is a Felder F7, it's OK but wouldn't get another.

    Making large shaped cornices.

In a different thread Davin asked:- Would love to know how to make the curved cornice, have made simpler version for armoires, but the one in your photo would be perfect - scary spindle jigs ? Todays name that wood challange

No afraid not, that's the only piece I have, it was just one short log that I picked up, it growing up an Elm tree that was cut down some 35+ years ago, the log it's self started to end crack very quickly so I cut a few small planks from it which surprisingly dried very well staying very flat.

    Todays name that wood challange

Clue it is quite light in weight, yet has a very fine grain you can just about mark the surface with a thumb nail and it is an evergreen.

Shelving alcoves - narrower at front?

Make up a wedge to fit between the wall and the batten, make the wedge the same width as the shelf is thick tapering to nothing at the front to 25mm or more at the back so that the shelf is slightly tapered the other way so that it tightens as it goes home, then put a small v grove at the join...

    Todays name that wood challange

Native grows all over the UK as far as I'm aware. I may be wrong but don't think it has any traditional or commercial uses.
