    The Philippine Mahogany that I know of is also known as Luan or Meranti quite a low grade hardwood used for Joinery so if it's that then no great fortune afraid, but never say never it maybe something else.Chris

    The tube is just a tube surely and the flats just a sheet beaten over to cover the edges, that would be my approach anyway.

    Surely copper plating could mean copper sheeted as in a copper plated ships hull?

    It could also be Afromosia or even Hydua, but these are both very difficult to come by as well.

    Don't know what it is but I know that brass tools were used in the manufacture of explosives and munitions to help reduce the risk of sparks. May be either making or defuzing bombs etc.

    A bit of recycled rubber carpet underlay seems to work well for me.

    There seems to be many woods that get marked as Mahogany but once you get into veneers that goes up Ten fold, but looking at your bit I'd say that looks very like pomel sapele, so sapele solid to match.

    I also think if you do find some one with a kiln they will just tell you the same , you will just end up with kiln dried fire wood, the only chance you have to avoid large splits is very slowly.
