Table Saw Jig or Lathe Jig??

I dont like the idea of putting sideways force on the tablesaw blade. Too much depth of cut and or feed rate then big bang and and chunks of wood and metal flying about. The jig itself is not that different from a router lathe which I think would be a better option. A wood lathe would be better...

    No 3 plane too small

I thought a 3 finger grip is what you are supposed to use on all handled planes. Regards John

Good sturdy bench there. What mess? My work space would hardly ever be that tidy. Regards John

Laminating solid oak floorboards to mage 100mm thick piece of timber

Yes epoxy would be the glue to use. I made a low angle shooting board plane using PVA and with big humidity changes had to do a repair job on it within 2 years. Used epoxy on the repair. Been fine after the repair. Regards John

    No 3 plane too small

I agree the #3 is handy to have as an additional plane but not essential to have. Since I got one I find it does a lot of the things a block plane would be used for but having a handle its more comfortable to use. Regards John

    Super soaker ideas needed

How about a pump up garden spray pack. No electrics or motors. You may need to pump it up to pressure for them but after that they have a fair bit of squirt time. Something like this. VOXON 5L Pump Action Pressure Sprayer With Pressure Release Valve, Garden Knapsack Sprayer : Amazon.co.uk...

Anybody seen a gate bolt like this one?

I can't see anything right with it. In terms of security it ticks no boxes. A determined thief will likely get past most padlock and bolt arrangements with an bit of work but that is almost an invite to come in. Regards John

What's the best way to make mitred joins for keepsake box?

As others have said unless the miter saw is a good one and well set up it will not be accurate enough. Have a trial run with some pine as it will be a good exercise in setting up the saw and learning about miter joints. I use the tablesaw like recipio says but with a sled. Shooting board is the...

    Workbench Project

Its a very nice looking bench. On moxons while they are great to have I would not replace the front vice with one. A portable one to sit on the bench top is a better way to go. I find the bit I like best is that it raises the work to a very comfortable height where you dont have to bend over...

    Hilka smoothing plane info wanted

Never heard of them before but it looks quite good. Give it a try. Still got wooden handles so the 60tes does look about right. Looks a whole lot better made than their latest offering. Regards John

    Partially or Fully Threaded Screw?

First welcome to the forum. I would not trust a ladder that is just screwed together. Normally the rungs are round and fit into holes in the side of the rails. A more basic ladder can have rectangular rungs that fit in notches on the front of the rails then screwed. The screws just hold the...

    Organisation and workflow

I think we fall into the trap of feeling like we are failing if its not up there with the BS image fed us by modern media. All those videos of perfect workshops clean as operating rooms. Those buzwords like focused, driven, and the like remind me of those horrible management...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Done a few non woodwork things on my bench but I would draw the line at that. Be too much of a clean up required afterwards. Don't know why the 3 little piggies were so worried about the big bad wolf. Regards John

    Help and Advice

I have lately been thinking what will happen to my tools when I shuffle off. For my part I would like them to go to people who will make use of them and hopefully get joy from some of them like I have had. The kids are not really into woodwork but I hope they keep a piece or two just as...

    Chisel Buying Advice

I worked with a guy who had been involved in ship salvage and he told me that the steel from the German fleet skuttled in Scapa Flow was in high demand as it was sunk pre atomic time. To make scientific measuring equipment mostly as it had no background trace of radiation. I could see the logic...

    Machinery wheels? Casters

I have tried 4 braked and swivel and the 2 fixed/unbraked with 2 swivel braked and also find the 4 braked swivel the best to move around. (bit of a mouthful that sentence) Anything that sits on the wheels while working is never as stable as feet on the floor and I find thicknessing big heavy...
