    drill depth stop question

Tape does for me. Those split ones look like they would be good. Like the OP I am pretty disgusted with the simple grub screw ones so no longer use them. Went back to just using a bit of tape and to be honest that does the job pretty well. Regards John

    Vice (again)

Sorry clicked twice. Anyhow my version of a home made vice dog. Just pull it out and turn it round. Not my idea but it was the best one I saw around. Regards John

    Clinometer - questions about device

Compasses were usually filled with alcohol. Reason being it would not freeze. I have heard stories of sailors so desperate for the grog that they drank the liquid. Oil would not likely freeze but would thicken up in the cold. Levels were also filled with alcohol as in ''spirit level''. The...

    Another dust extraction question :)

A machine like that really needs a LPHV extractor. 2 HP minimum. Its putting out high volume so you need a high volume extractor. Planers also make long shavings that tend to block smaller hoses. Cyclones while being great separators and keep the filter cleaner for longer do reduce the airflow...

    Tapered Cuts

I would say the mechanism for kickback is that by not using the fence there is not enough control to push it strait. I dont intend starting a tablesaw safety argument but its not something I would feel safe doing. Regards John

    Tapered Cuts

I would not try to follow a line freehand on the tablesaw because thats asking for a big kick back. All rip cuts have to use the fence. Its a job for the bandsaw or even rip to a line with a hand saw. Refine cut with a handplane. After you get one done then that one can be the template and...

    Planer secondary fence

I must have missed this thread when it was going. Totally see you'r reasoning on this. By all means spread the blade wear. The fence is only essential to square edges to faces as in jointing. Faces can be planed flat anywhere across the blades you like so the secondary fence may not even be...

    Patio fence / fencing

As Sachakins says put posts down the back of the wall. There really is no practical way to fix it on top. Regards John

    Cooking oil

Regardless of which oils go rancid or not I am sure any old used oil will be on the nose after a while.😷

    Cooking oil

And after its gone off it will promote mold and fungal growth. Regards John

Post a photo of the last thing you made

You are getting plenty practice at M&Ts then. I did a bed headboard like that and found the glue up a bit tricky. Must have been down to the last minutes before the glue set up. Lining up all the tenons with the holes was kind of stressful. Got there but a close run thing. Regards John

    Historical sticker

Can't quite make out the whole message but I take it that its wartime made when nickel was in short supply. Got a pic of the plane itself. Regards John

    Convertible Mitre/Table Saws: any good?

I would give it a big miss. The very small table would make it very difficult to work with. Does not look safe either. Regards John

Thanks. I will check Hipshot out. Don't know if I am up for winding my own pickups however. Regards John

Very nice indeed. I really like how that neck blends in. Been thinking on having a go at a bass for a long time now. Whose hardware and pickup did you use. Regards John

    Newbie

The book above is about the best one for a beginner out there. It would be good to search out a woodturning club or even a men's shed to get started so you get an idea of what you need. Regards John

    TYZACK Backsaw Heresy?

I can't see a problem replacing saw plate thats no longer functional. If I had teeth snapping off I would the same. Regards John

    English workbench (Rex Krueger plans)

It looks like a good practical bench to me and should be fine to work on. I would not worry too much about the small details as after all the process is a learning curve. I am on bench No4 now and still think of things I could have done different. As you make things on the bench you will get to...
