    What are these handles called?

78 quid for what is just regular hardware is a bit like being mugged. The word Moxon is almost a licence to rob. I was about to buy a kit with hand wheels and acme thread but never liked the way the rod sticks out the front. Few bruises waiting to happen. Anyhow I found an easy and no cost...

    Shooting board doesn’t work properly.

I used a 5 1/2 for a while but if you have a lot to do the hand gets a bit uncomfortable as its awkward to hold. I had a big old plane iron and a lump of wood so made a miter plane with the blade bevel down at about 37*. The blade was 2 1/2'' and bigger than required but the thing has a nice bit...

    Multiple question thread

1 A card scraper will give a very good surface that should not require sanding but it is hard on the thumbs if you have a lot to scrape. The cabinet scraper lets you do the work with less pain. Its good to have both. 3 Stanley shaves are OK if you fettle them. They come with the bed loaded with...

    Advice On Rust--Using Abrasives

Bit of turps or spirit and a paper towel will wipe any oil off before the wax. I have not had any finishing problems but I do avoid anything with silicone in it. You can use turps instead of oil with the pad or sandpaper if you like. Trying to remove all the rust dry sounds like a long job and...

    Luthiers...

Not a real luthier but dabble at making things that play. Like DW said we that do the occasional build likely see things different than a professional luthier. A kit is a good cheap way to get started. It likely wont be very high quality but you should end up with something that plays. Takes...

    Advice On Rust--Using Abrasives

Not understanding why you can't have oils for cleaning rust. It would be much easier than dry scrubbing. Regards John

    Advice On Rust--Using Abrasives

I find light surface rust shifts with those green kitchen pads and wd40. If the rust is a bit heavier and the kitchen pad is not doing it then 240 grit paper and wd40. After its clean then a rub with paste wax. Regards John

The shame of a tidy workshop

I would fall into the untidy group. I do clean up between jobs and start with a clean shed and sharp tools. When the place gets too messy to continue then I stop and clear up enough to keep going. That often means a clean up after stock prep and you do have to have to clear up and get organised...

    Forza Segoni-Smith bandsaw

With wood blocks The faces need squaring up more often but they are kinder on the blade. Bit of wax on the faces is good too. Regards John

    Winding Sticks - Best Length

Dont think there is any standard. I made mine 12'' as I would hardly ever have a board wider than that. Its likely the best all round length I can think of for nearly all I do. Times you do something wide like a whole benchtop then hunt up 2 bits of anything strait. I used a spirit level and the...

    Inherited workbench restoration

For the oil I would keep it covered with paper towel soaked in turps. Keep it wet for a few hours then dry towel or sawdust to soak it up. I dont think the stain will go completely but as long as it does not stain the bits of wood you are working on that will do. After the oil stain is dry then...

    Forza Segoni-Smith bandsaw

Cant say I have heard of them either. For the blocks use a bit of wood dowel and a hammer and tap them out. With the screws undone of course. Put the block in the vice to do it. As to blocks if those come out whole then just clean and square the faces and keep using them. Another option is a...

    Insulated feral cat house

Did not think that one through so try again. I got a plan from a wildlife group site. Boxes are supposed to hang in a tree but as I made 2 one is in a tree next door and that one is above the back deck. They do not seem to have much fear of people and will take a bit of carrot or apple from the...

    Insulated feral cat house

Never made a cat house but had to make a house for this guy. Someone else likes my shed-p1010829-jpg Someone else likes my shed-p1010828-jpg Felt guilty evicting him so made a couple of boxes and not sure if it was the same possum but the box in my back yard was occupied within days of...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

Agree with DW . Many years ago I got the scheppach water sharpener for my turning tools but also tried plane irons and chisels on it. They were definitely sharp enough for working even if I have no idea what grit equivalent it was. Now that said I soon went back to the oilstone because...
