Advice for a newbie : Electra Beckum DB 800

The photos help get an idea of whats what so thanks for posting them. Looks like they have a fixing system all their own. Never seen anything like that on a lathe. I had a google search that showed some picks but everything is in German so no wiser. Your best bet will be trying to contact the...

    Storm felled timber.

Quite a lot of the eucalyptus species are great turning timbers. Most of my turning has been eucalyptus of various kinds. Have not used the tasmanian verity however. tasmanian blue gum - Google Search Harder than the woods you guys usually turn but should not be a challenge for HSS tools. Rough...

Advice required: traditional saws and Japanese saws

Finding an old rip saw will be hard if you cant sharpen or restore it. New ones are costly and will still need to be resharpened after a bit of work. Few makers make rip saws anymore but this is likely the least costly. Pax Rip Hand Saw Plenty new crosscuts at better prices but they still need...

How long does it take for an experienced woodworker to chop out a mortice

At the end of the day its whatever gets the job done. It has only just dawned on me what you were describing in the first post. I was just thinking 30mm wide. Anyhow does not hurt to have a few ways to skin the cat. Regards John

How long does it take for an experienced woodworker to chop out a mortice

For a mortice that size I would have drilled out the bulk then cleaned up the sides with chisels but then I am a lazy kind of woodworker. Hand chopping a mortice needs a chisel the width of the mortice and you set your gauge against the chisel to mark it out the joint. Chopping a Mortise by...

    Smoking Startrite table saw

I would think that if the smoke was from the motor that it would no longer be running. Smoke is usually a motors way of saying ''thats all folks''. As said its likely a blunt or wrong blade. As you dont have a riving knife yet a safe simple test would be just let it run for 5 mins then stop...

Help for changing headstock attatchment Record DML 24X

I started out turning on one of those lathes. As said faceplate should screw on. I also recomend the Keith Rowley book. I also started out with that book as I had a bit of luck and it was in a box of old tools that came with the lathe. Anyhow bowls are for after you get the basics of using the...

    Chess Board

Construction is a bit of both. Long grain strips glued up then crosswise strips inlaid. I first intended a solid construction as in a chess board but with the stripes between squares figured it would be pretty hard to line the squares up. Regards John

    Chess Board

Square or any other shape you like. I know turned ones are the standard but can also be a bit boring. I got a replica set of the Lewis figures and after that turned ones look a bit ho hum. Made a Tafil board a couple of years ago and realised round pieces would not look right for an old viking...

    Moxon vice

The greatest thing about a moxon is it is so kind to you'r back. I only got around to making one last year but should have done it a lot sooner. After making a saw sharpening vice I realized that working upright was pretty good so the moxon soon followed. Regards John

    Bandsaw newbie

Another thing to consider is how you are going to cut 12'' logs. They are pretty da#ned heavy for starters. You will need to build pretty hefty infeed and outfeed roller setup. Need help to lift them on and off. You also need to have some kind of sled to prevent the log rolling during the cut or...

Dovetails - a bit of history

    Quick release front vise issues

I think thats the right decision tibi. In my case they replaced the vice and within a year the replacement vice was doing the same thing. I made the best of it for a few more years but it was a big frustration. About 9 years now with a strait screw vice and no problems. No more nice bits of wood...

    Retrievable, or firewood?

Firewood or trip to the hospital? I know there those great feats perseverance in turning that we all admire but sometines some sow's ears will never become that silk purse. Regards John

    Quick release front vise issues

If Bod's suggestion does not work send it back and ask for a refund. Then get the vice like that without quick relese. It will work all the time and there is nothing that can go wrong with it. I spent years messing with a dodgy QR vice. Its nice to have something that just works and I really...

    Mortising attachments?

I have taken to leaving the mortice ends round also. Takes a lot less time to round the tenon with a rasp than square up the mortice. Only time I had a hankering for a morticer was making a bed that had about 40 M&Ts but I knew that after that It would not see enough use to be justified...

    Sabre 250 Guide Bearings

Dont get the cheap ones. The bandsaw is hard on bearings and the resin in wood dust gums then up so they must be sealed. Go for a good brand name unless you like changing them often. Top 10 Bearing Brands in The World - TKW Bearings Regards John
