Tool sharpening service for around 30 chisels?

If you are going to be turning then you will have to learn sharpening. Turning tools require more frequent sharpening than other tools. Every few minutes in some cases. Find your local turning club or men's shed for someone to show you how it's done. Having them sharpened is only good for a...

    Which plane for shooting board?

The wood is Tasmanian leatherwood as beech is kinda hard to find here. Was a chunk I had in the turning stash and it was well seasoned so figured it would do. Made it about 6 years ago but have had some movement issues with it and twice have had to reflatten the sole. Our weather here is the...

    Laguna DriftMaster bandsaw fence system

I built one of these. Universal Bandsaw Fence - YouTube Cost nothing and works better than the factory fence that came with the saw. Zero clearance cutting is an added bonus. Regards John

Silk purse from a sow's ear? Any advice?

A yard is a meter thats been short changed by 3 and a bit inches. I got used to both systems as when Britain changed over the change was so gradual they still have not finished it after 50 years. When I came to Australia everything was metric as they did the change in one go. Picked a date...

    Which plane for shooting board?

I have used a 4 a 7 and 5&1/2. The 5&1/2 was best all round. Since then I made a wooden one for shooting with the blade set BD at 37*. The lower blade angle does a better job on end grain. I would like a 51 but can not justify the cost for the small bit of shooting I do. Regards John

    Turning advice

As others have said its best to find other turners to learn the basics from. Some of the youtube stuff is good but there is a lot thats not going to help. This guy is worth watching and is one of the worlds best turners. Richard Raffan sharpening scrapers - YouTube He also has written a few...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

I cant spend the time reading up on the current on trend moral high ground stance I should be taking every time I go to the hardware store. Now in my defense I did get my plane 12 years ago when I think we were helping China raise a billion people out of poverty. Some street cred there surely...

    Luban Chinese Block Plane

I tend to agree with the above. The Chinese will make whatever the the client wants at the cost level the client is aiming at. Good stuff you pay for, cheap and cheerful you take you'r chance. Rather than heap cr@p on the manufacturing in China just ask who is asking for that stuff to be made...

    How long?

I usually detension at the end of the day as that was the advice I got when I first got a bandsaw. I think its more to do with keeping the tyres from getting flat spots than the overall strain on blade or frame. There have been times I forgot and its sat there tensioned for weeks with no...

    Atkinson saw ID

A multi purpose saw. Would have had a few other blades in the set. The leaver screw in the handle lets you quickly change blades. Not all that uncommon and there are modern versions still around. Best get back in that garage and hunt up the other blades. Regards John

Retrofitting a Hammer spiral cutter head

I have just fitted a spiral head to a Dewalt 735 thicknesser a few months back. I think you will find how to videos for just about any machine refit. Search out some videos then after watching them figure out if you feel like giving it a try. You could also ask Hammer a few questions. A...

    Workshop stool

I have an old kitchen stool in the shed for some small work and just to take the load off now and then. Tried a wheeled office chair but the wheels made working too hard. I cant work long bent over the bench anymore but using a moxon to raise the work so you stand upright is a great help. Nice...

    Starting my first tool restoration

The crack in the abutment may not be a problem but I would feel happier with it glued up. You can use acetone or spirit to clean it out first then either superglue or 2 part epoxi and clamp. Its also a good idea with old woodies to check the wedge sides are not too tight. As the body shrinks the...

    Fence for Table Saw

I would screw it on rather than glue. Countersink the heads of course. Easier to do, likely stay straighter and you can change it out at a later date if it gets worn or something better comes along. Regards John

    Somax sash clamps

The ones in the picture look pretty good. Look better than the record ones. I have only heard of somax sawsets but they are good quality. Had a google and as Pete says they are made in japan so they should be better than most. Regards John

    Importance of crown guard?

Thats a habit you really need to break before you have a nasty accidient. You never ever free hand cut on a tablesaw. No matter how careful you are sooner or later it will go seriously wrong. Always use the fence to rip and the miter gauge to crosscut. Make a taper jig for tapers that runs...
