    Any saw makers out there?

Blackburn tools but it may be expensive with postage. Blackburn Tools - Toothed backsaw blades Other option is buy a hardpoint saw and use the steel plate from that. Cut off the hardened teeth and file your own. Regards John

    Lathe servicing

If you can get a between centers turning to run true (without chuck) then chances are the chuck itself may be the problem rather than the lathe. Dirt and gunk on the threads and shoulders of the chuck and spindle can cause the chuck to run out of true. Add to that the jaws being not true. Errors...

    New bandsaw

I would just see how it goes at cutting wood to start with. If it is harder to push the wood in the cutting direction than the other then talk to the place you bought it before taking sandpaper to a brand new machine. Pretty sure that would void the warranty. Regards John

    End grain sealing green wood

Some use an old electric frying pan to melt wax. Best done with water in the pan and the wax in another dish in the water. Direct heat may cause a fire. Regards John

    Record power bench mounted bandsaw.

Blade speed is a bit high for metal cutting. Aluminium not too bad but steel will blunt blades fast. I avoid metal cutting on my bandsaw. Not just because of blades but also getting metal swarf all through the machine. Odd times I do cut steel is with a metal cutting blade in the jigsaw or the...

    End grain sealing green wood

End grain sealer can be costly. Old paint or old pva glue can be used. Others melt wax and dip the ends. Anything that seals the ends will do. Regards John

Marking hand tools. How and why?

I dont mark mine but if I worked on building sites I would. Regards John

    User side of the bandsaw

To be honest its not something I ever gave a lot of thought to. I have broken a couple of blades and the noise does make you jump but it's all contained inside the guards. On the machines most of us weekend warriors use a blade break should be reasonably safe. There would be some risk if you...

Tool sharpening service for around 30 chisels?

That was the book that got me started. I am still using the toolrest after about 17 years. The cheap grinder is getting a bit sorry however. Used his lathe bench design too and its still going strong. Regards John

Flat top grooving/slotting circular saw blàde?

Never knew they came that big. A lot of steel spinning if you go a full width cut. Anyhow never come near needing the full depth on the 8'' yet. Regards John

    Tool identification help!

Being made in Sweden it should be good. I can't help with the KD history however. My favourite shifter has Sweden on the handle and is gray black not chromed. Nice and smooth and no slop. Regards John

Designing and making an Emperor size Sleigh Bed

BLO is very easy to do and will give a matt finish. Danish oil will give a bit more shine but will take longer as its about a day between coats. Last bed I made was done with Danish oil. About 6 coats then wait another week and wax. As you have put a lot of work into making a great looking bed...

    How to clean wooden planes

As a few have mentioned extra fine steel wool and spirit or turps cleans it without removing the patina. Paint spots usually scrape off with a bit of old bank card. Resort to metal if that does not work. It's up to you how far to take the cleaning. I like them to look their age but also look...

    Which plane for shooting board?

Yes I remember school woodwork and the only plane was a Marples wooden jack. Used for everything. Makes me think how spoiled I am now that I have more planes than a sane man needs. Regards John

    Raising a bed

Without seeing a picture of the bed its impossible to say but I am thinking a bed 2m up on spindly 50mm legs is unsafe. Another issue will be wracking stress. The bed design will be for the current short legs and will not handle the massive increase in sideways stress without decent bracing of...

    Mulberry tree - wood

Turns really good and makes great tool handles. Also a really good wood for archery bows if thats of any interest. I used a bit for the handle of my vice. Regards John

Flat top grooving/slotting circular saw blàde?

I think the 180mm should do you but there are 200mm blades around. Available here in Oz anyhow. Try Amazon and ebay. Dado stacks are uasually only 200mm as well. Dont think anyone does a 250mm dado or trenching blade. Regards John
