    Is this a joke ?.

Waiting for things to get cheaper has never worked for me so now is always the best time to buy. I get regular emails from a lot of tool sellers and the bandsaw I got 15 years ago would be twice the price now. We are also at the end of a long spell of fairly low inflation so most things will...

    3/16 blade on a RP Bs300e.

There are stabilizer guides for small blades if you cant adjust the side guides far enough back. Saw Blade Stabilizer - Band Saw Stabilizer | Carter Products When I first tried my hand at bandsaw boxes I got away with just using the back bearing and taking care to not deflect the blade too far...

Carbide tool choice help please for lathe turning

You just may have talked me into giving it a try. I do have some spare cutters for the spiral head thicknesser and it would not take much effort to cobble something up. Just one more tool. Regards John

Why use a cyclone on your vac for power tools?

I can see that going up in smoke one day. Regards John

Carbide tool choice help please for lathe turning

I dont see the attraction of carbide tools for turning and have not felt the need to go there. Perhaps for quick roughing a carbide tip may do but I am not convinced that even there its as good as a roughing gouge. Anything like a finishing cut needs a freshly sharpened tool. Now that sounds...

Why use a cyclone on your vac for power tools?

I would say if you'r filter is not clogging up then you don't need a cyclone. The aim with a cyclone is to capture most of the dust before it gets to you'r shop vac so it helps keep the filter going longer. My vac is an old wet n dry and bagless. Good for wood chips but fine dust clogs the...

    Coronet Herald and Tools advice

I was thinking it was the feet of the bench and could not see a reason for that. Both lathes I have had bolted direct to the bench top. Regards John

    What wood

Looks like meranti to me also. Its very common for doors and windows here in Australia while sepele is less common and a bit more expensive. Both tend to be substitutes for mahogany. Regards John

Feet? I thought the ends of the legs were feet. Nothing else required. Regards John

    What wood

Meranti can vary a lot but sometimes there are nice bits of wood in the mix. Its used a lot for doors and windows as its quite stable so movement issues are reduced. If you ever get the chance to pick the good boards it can be quite good. Regards John

    Coronet Herald and Tools advice

I would build a solid wood bench for it. Solid being the key word. There is a school of thought that wood absorbs the vibrations better than metal legs will. I followed the plan in Keith Rowley's book ''Woodturning a foundation course''. Built it for a Record DML 24 but its still in service...

Getting from the car to work

At that distance its a pleasant stroll and a great deal safer than being on a bike in traffic. When the weather is bad you would get just as wet on a bike as walking. Also with walking you should not feel the urge to dress up in lycra. Regards John

    Dado Sets

Never seen a startrite saw so dont know if a dado stack can be fitted. The threaded part of the arbor needs to be 25mm to take a dado. For saws that dont have the arbor length there are trenching blades (thick kerf) that will take a 6mm cut so you just need to take more passes at it. In a lot of...

    Mesmerising

Its part of our human makeup to stare into a wood fire. Pitch black outside the cave and a wolf howling in the distance. Sitting next to a ducted heat vent has not got the proper vibe. Regards John

    Any saw makers out there?

I also thought the steel on a hardpoint would not be suitable but I have seen it done by some on the Australian forum. How to Make Handsaws - Australian Wood Review Shim steel is another source. DIY Frame Saw Blade from Carbon Steel Shim - YouTube Regards John
