    African Tongue drum

Being a musical instrument the size/length of the tongues will dictate the note. There are templates on line and likely some final tuning to get it playing right. Looks like a nice project for a rainy day. Regards John

    Holdfast not holding wood down

Like Phil says they hold stuff down but they are usually used with a stop and sometimes a birds mouth stick to keep things from sliding around. The Holdfast and the Batten - Tail Vice Alternative For Hand Tool Woodworking - YouTube Regards John

Workshop in garden shed and noise

Its luck of the draw and kind of depends on the actual neighbors and your relationship with them. Some can be good and some will complain about anything. It often comes up on WW forums of people having to curtail woodworking after complaints to council. I keep my noisey machine use to daytime...

How To Make This Wedge Holding System?

Looking at the OPs picture I would say it was done like you say in the last sentence. Regards John

How To Make This Wedge Holding System?

Do it just like the picture. The bits cut off the front fence becone the wedges. That way the holding side of those wedges is parallel to that fence. Tip to remember with wedges is thin (low angle) ones hold better than thick(high angle) wedges. Regards John

    Wooden plane restoration

I only got into wood planes in the last 15 years or so and have done up a few. Before that I thought they were too hard to adjust the blade but spend a day at it and you soon get the nack. That one looks to be in fair shape with no big cracks. the wedge looks good too. As others have said its...

    What’s this tool?

I still use one as do plenty other dinosaurs on this and other WW forums. The asteriod did not wipe them all out. Regards John

    Block plane setting

If that angle has worked for you all those years keep doing it as long as It is getting the job done. I do use a secondary bevel as I freehand hone on an oilstone. Dont even know what the angle is but a degree or two more than the 25* primary. There is such a wide range of views on sharpening...

How do I make my life easier?

Ask yourself how long will be the longest board you will want to normally plane by hand. Your bench does not need be longer than that. There are also workarounds for the odd board longer than the bench. All to often folks are tempted to build the ultimate monster bench taking up all all too much...

    Identifying an old lathe

It does have a homemade look to it. The headstock, tailstock and bed look like they belong toghther and it likely was an old lathe but the other bits look to have been added later. The banjo and rest dont look like it matches the machine and that drive center came from Vincent Price's dungeon...

    First hedgehog already!

I kind of miss the British wildlife although we are blessed with plenty critters here they are all quite different. Always had a soft spot for hedgehogs. Used to find them on the walk home from school and carried a few home home (wrapped up in a coat or jacket as they are kind of hard to handle)...

    Einhell tools

About 15 years ago I was partitioning off a bit of the garage for storage so needed to bolt the bottom plate into the concrete floor. I went to hire an SDS drill for the day and was taken aback by the hire fee. Went and bought an Ozito at a lot less than the days hire and its still going strong...

Silk purse from a sow's ear? Any advice?

Thats as near to a silk purse as could be done. Great restoration. There is however one thing you have not done. It is a serious breach of forum law to do up a plane and not post pics of it making shavings:) Regards John

Makita benchtop thicknesser dust collection issue

Shop vacs seldom are up to it when attached to a planer. Also the reduction in pipe size will just not shift the volume of shavings. They are also longish shavings and tend to clog small diameter pipes. I would be against closing air gaps as the airflow also serves to cool the planer motor. My...

    Morticer or pillar drill

How many mortices are you going to be doing? Unless its lots every day and time is tight then you would have to ask do I really need one. Most of us get by with chisels. As others have said a pillar drill will get more use on a day to day basis. Regards John
