    What Wood is This

Red gum looks closer to the mark than jarrah. Both got used for posts and sleepers. Has a ucylipt look to it whatever it is. Looks a bit like the blue gum I used on my bench. Regards John

How to keep a vice tommy bar from disjoining

I have not had a problem with mine. Been going fine for 10 years now. One end is glued on with epoxy and the other is solid part of the stick. If it ever gets to be a problem I will just wrap some elastic bands around to stop the caps striking the metal. Regards John

    5minute epoxy

I have turned platters glued up with pva so I would think 5min epoxy will also hold. That said any glue up is only as good as the joint preparation and clamping. Regards John

    Prevent Glue Syringe from clogging

Its easy to clean out water based glues after use with warm water and dishwashing liquid. Let them soak a while then pump through a few times. With epoxy you just have to bin the syringe. I got asked at the chemist one time what they were for and the lady was surprised when I said woodwork...

    Workbench vice

Search woodworking vice. There are many forms of it and you have to decide what suits your situation in terms of function and how much you want to pay. A picture of the worktop would help us point you in the right direction. Regards John

One way to spend a wet afternoon

While clearing out some things yesterday for the rubbish I had the idea of using a broken bandsaw blade to have a go at a turning saw. I made the small one a couple of years ago. Its good for small stuff like clearing out dovetails and the blades are easy to get. This one is for larger jobs...

    Wooden plane restoration

Good to hear its getting there. Setting the blade with a hammer is one of those things you just have to do until you can do it. Daunting at first but when you get there its very satisfying as are getting nice shavings. Regards John

    Dangerous Pallets?

Chances are that most household items will have been in a shipping container fumigated with MB or phosphine. Its done to try and stop pests being transported around the globe. Containers get ventilated to disperse the gas so goods can be handled. No getting away from chemicals in this modern...

Anyone need a new tool cabinet

Jees you bunch are a tough croud to please. He did this wrong, that wrong and nearly had a tablesaw accident. Not much said about the chest itself. Now I would have been happier seeing better tablesaw saftey myself but he did a fine job on the chest and it was all recycled wood. All up one of...

Guitar making. a lovely video to watch

I play around making cigar box instruments and have done a couple of electrics plus a dulcimer. The OPs video was a great watch and while I realised just how crude my efforts are I also learned a few things from it. Always good to see a master at work. I will get around to watching the cigar box...

    Bench Grinder (or sharpening system)?

Cant advise on UK brands but any decent 8'' bench grinder will do. Change out one of the grey wheels for a white aluminum oxide wheel and its good to go. A CBN wheel is a bit better if you have the cash but the white wheel does pretty good. Get or make a bench mounted tool rest to replace the...

    Forstner bit extension bar?

I have used a few bit extensions and like said the all will likely be somewhat off. Best result is drill as far as you can with the bit itself to start strait then employ the extension to get to final depth. Clearing the waste as you go. I also found it a good idea to grind a small flat on the...

Mystery tool again turning chisel ?

You beat me to it DBC. I have spent a lot of time on the end of one those. Went to sea to see the world but spent a lot of time painting. It's one of those never ending jobs on a ship. Regards John

    Faceplate ring

The few times I use one I get compasses and draw a circle on the base then set ring in circle and screw it down. Half the diameter of the ring is the setting for the compasses but slightly larger is ok. Its easy to eyeball one circle inside another. Best screws I have found for faceplates are...

    Holdfast not holding wood down

A slick highly polished benchtop is also not going to help work holding or general hand tool work as the wood tends to slither around. I learned this many years ago using an old office desk to work on. A going over with 80 grit sandpaper helped things a lot. Regards John
