    Fretsaw Advice

You could also make one. The good part of making one is you have more control of the blade tension. Nice little project for a wet afternoon. Regards John

Could not have said it any better than that. Regards John

    Resin use

Those defects are gum veins and eucylipts usually have them. Normally you attend to those when the bowl is nearing its final shape and size. Normal 5min epoxy can be used mixed with sawdust, coffee grounds or even dyed for wider voids and for thin ones CA glue and sawdust, coffee grounds or...

How many seconds did you last.

One min and 20s. I was waiting for the intro to finish but when he started on the content and that was just as bad. Some people can pull off the '' so bad it's good'' act but I can only describe that as irritating. Regards John

    Outdoor table - nothing works!

Doug 71 is on the right track. There is no maintenance free product I know of that will protect wood out in the elements long term. Ask any boat owner why he scrapes back the varnish every year. The best of the bunch are outdoor furniture oils and the easiest to reapply but it needs doing at...

    Workbench build - finished

Very nice bench and the anti wracking on the vice is quite clever. I just may copy that. Thats a bench that will last a lifetime. I built myself a split top about 10 years ago and find it does everything I need although I have made a few small mods over the years. Here is how I did my planing...

    Help identify an old saw

Its a tenon saw with a steel back. I am not sure of the maker and have not seen the spanner trade mark before. Does the medallion on the handle have any name on it? Going by the style of it it could be pre WW2. Regards John

for those with a VB or better lathe...

Few of us could mount a 1 ton blank but there are bowl coring tools for more modest lumps of wood. Woodcut and Mcnaughton spring to mind and there may be others. Cant saw I have ever seriously looked into really large stuff. Regards John

    Scheppach compressor in Aldi

It would likely be fine if its only for occasional use. If you intend it to be doing a lot of work then look at something a bit better. I have a cheap one about that size and for the odd times I run a nail gun or blow up a tyre it does the job but I dont think it would be up for spraying and...

'Este' Plane Restoration - 50mm Iron

As said have a go. Its not a quality plane but the experience gained will be good and you should get a usable plane plus learned some more about what makes a plane tick. Best way to get the nicks out of the blade is just grind them strait off the edge then form a new bevel and then hone. There...

for those with a VB or better lathe...

You can still get the ring cutter tool here in Australia but of course its now made in China. Ringcutter With Post I actually have a Leady lathe made by Bruce Leadbetter. He was a woodwork teacher and developed the lathe for schools. When you got a lathe from him you got a couple of hours with...

Makes you think that we may be a bit spoiled with all the gear we have. Not only do I admire the guys skill with very basic tools but that he can get up and walk after turning like that all day. Regards John

    Cutting Bandsaw Guide Blocks

No harm in saving a bit of money. You can keep touching up the faces until they are too short to fit. My current saw has bearing blade guides but to be honest I dont see those doing any better a job than blocks. Regards John

    Cutting Bandsaw Guide Blocks

I thought you were talking about wood blocks but yes you can sand carbon ones or even use a file. Are your carbon ones the Olson cool blocks? For wood blocks I used jarrah as I had some but lignum would be the best wood for it. I found that the saw ran very nice and quiet with wood blocks. You...

I'm worried about what people will think after I die...

I***t is a verboten word on the forum. I have also had it changed to silly person. Not sure if thats supposed to cause less offence but thats the rule. Strange world we live in when words can be banned regardless of context. Regards John

    My heart is broken

Sorry to hear that. Loosing a dog or any pet always is hard. Our last dog was a spaniel so I have a soft spot for them. That last trip to the vet was very hard. Make her an urn to be proud of. Regards John

    Cutting Bandsaw Guide Blocks

On my old saw I used wood guide blocks. I used to reface them on the disc sander. I would never have tried doing anything that small on a miter saw or table saw. You could even do them by hand as not much needs to come off to get them square. Regards John

    What hammer for chisels?

Mallet V hammer. Almost as good as a sharpening thread. Its a fact of life that not everyone will be a good boy and use the correct tool all the time. For that reason there were attempts made to make chisels that the bad boys could use and abuse. The handles usually last as long as it takes...
