    Triton thicknesser head removal?

Not a Triton but I have pulled the head from a dewalt to install a spiral head and found one bearing was slightly larger than the other so you can take it out through the bigger end. Another tip taking anything apart is take photos as you take it apart so you can see how those bits go back...

What wood would and what wood wouldn't make your preferred species to work with.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the wood database. Tells a woodworker almost all they need to know about most woods. Even after messing about with wood most of my life I still find it helpful. Honduran Mahogany | The Wood Database (Hardwood). Regards John

    Mortise & Tenon

I had to look that up. The Japanese Gennou & Handle Part 5 – Kigoroshi – Covington & Sons Tools I see it gets used a fair bit where a tight fit is required like boatbuilding. Similar methods exist in western woodworking where a watertight joint is required. I recall seeing a clip of someone...

    Can you ID this?

Bench or floor stand pillar drill & bandsaw

Like the others say. Benchtop bandsaws are basically toys. Benchtop drills on the other hand are the same machine as floor standing just on a shorter pillar. In general woodworking I have not found a benchtop drill to be limiting. There are workarounds like working over the edge of a bench if...

    1/2" Router

I hardly ever use the 1/2'' hand held as it is awkward to control. Last ten years it has not come out of the router table. If you are new to routers and intend using it hand held then 1/4'' plunge router is the way to go. I would also avoid trim routers if you are a beginner as there is more...

Cleats for a smallish shelf unit

French cleats are widely used by woodworkers as a very practical way to hang things. You can even make your own from wood or ply. As your's will be be holding china make sure the cleat anchors into the wall frame as I would not trust plasterboard alone. Regards John

    Plane restoration

Looks like another good addition to the collection. Better be careful because when you get to like restoring old tools you soon run out of space for them. At one stage I had 5 #4s which even I thought was more than enough so it was time to slow down a bit. Went well for a bit then I...

    Help identifying tool

I spent a few years using a sextant at sea and if that was for navigation there would be some way to sight an angle with it plus mirrors. Octant (instrument) - Wikipedia I have not seen an octant in the flesh but suspect it would have been a bit more high tec than that. There were earlier...

    Mitre saw stand

A few more pics of the stand bed without the saw and then with the saw attached ( showing clamps) would be a big help in sussing out the problem. Reading duke's suggestion it could be right but the picture is not much to go on. Most of those stands have a cross brace between the bars in the...

    Table saw fence

Most right handers use the right hand (with push stick) to move the wood through the cut. Left hand keeps wood against the fence. It's what feels comfortable to most. If you have been using the fence on the left all those years and are comfortable with it then thats OK too. Regards John

    Food safe ca glue

While I have no science argument to back this up I think the risk would be very low when the CA has cured. May be even less than a lot of woods. We live surrounded by man made compounds and eat off a lot of them. CA glue is the go to fix for cracks in woodturnings so if it was a health problem...

Never knew what I had been missing

I had been on the lookout for a wooden adjustable shave for quite a while. I was prepared for a bit of work and even to make a whole new body if it came to that so long as the blade and adjustment nuts were OK. Hardware looked good and it being a Mathieson I went for it. May try a standard...

Never knew what I had been missing

Well as the heading says I never knew how nice a wooden spokeshave is to use. For the last 50 years I have only ever used metal ones. They work well and get the job done but a wooden one just feels so much better in the hand. I picked up this adjustable Mathieson shave on ebay for a good price...

To buy old saws or new? Is the question.

To get a good rip saw then old saws are your best option because hardly anyone makes them any more. Some bespoke makers still offer them but at bespoke prices. A modern hard point will rip but nowhere as good or as easy as a good old rip saw made for the job. Regards John

    Saw storage

Could be a problem if they all looked the same but after a while you can identify the one you are after. When they hung flat on the wall it was easy to pick but when you start getting more saws they take up too much wall space that way. Regards John

Can i use a different ah drill battery

Higher amp hour lasts longer. There are options to re cell but I have not found any that I would call cost effective. A few tools I have got new batteries with matching chargers as a package deal. They will or should list the tool model numbers they suit. My Makita 14.4v drill is on it's second...

To buy old saws or new? Is the question.

You are right it the fact that a hard point saw has harder teeth and will stay sharp for longer but that is as far as your point goes. Metal may not be as hard as a file but its hard enough to cut the hardest wood. There is always a tradeoff between hardness and ease of sharpening. Hardpoint...

    Router recommendations

Big motrices like on a workbench are more than most routers can do depth wise. Usual way is drill out most of the waste then clean out with chisels. You could cut motrices with a router to the depth it will go then deepen them with a drill and chisels but thats a bit like doing the job twice. In...
