    Corded Drill

I think that bit just overloaded the drill. The spiral tip draws the bit in and so its trying to bite off more than the motor can chew. You have to go very slow with those. A brand new spade bit would have done it easy. Regards John

Do any of you sharpen your own planer/thicknesses blades? How?

I used to use a jig like this one. Found it did a great job and got the blades sharper than when new. Saves a lot of money and time. Regards John

What finish is on hardwood floor boards and how to get rid of it?

A job for an electric hand plane. They have tungsten blades. Save the blades on the planer thicknesser for when its back to bare wood. Regards John

    Workbench without a vice

It is a good video and shows how good the old work holding methods are. It also shows you can get by without a vice if you have to. I use holdfasts and the Doe's foot notched stick a lot and seldom use the end vice to secure boards on the bench top. The notched stick is a lot quicker than the...

Bridge City Sale on, ends 14th August

Not my idea of woodworking tools at any price. Yuk!

Post a photo of the last thing you made

You are not the first and for sure wont be the last thats done that. If all woodworkers were perfect then that rule about starting out with a bit extra timber on projects would not be required. Bu&&er when it happens but mistakes are part of the learning process. Regards John

    Long Clamp Advice

When I built a queen size bed I needed 2 clamps a tad over 2m long. Those clamp ends that you attach to a length of wood was the answer. About 25 quid for the clamp ends and some building demolition wood. I did explore the pipe clamp option but the pipe is not cheap and would be too flexible...

How did you learn to turn?

There are many turning gurus out there but I think Keith Rowley is the man to read when you are starting out. He really describes the safe way to get started. Regards John

    Why do we do it

Its the human urge to create. Where is the joy in just clicking a button and having something delivered or going to Ikea. If it were not for the lines on the floor I would never find my way out again. I guess when I started with my first house it was also to save money but I enjoyed doing it...

    First Guitar build

amilford I am impressed. You just jumped in the deep end and did it. Great job. I have been messing around at Cigar box guitars for a few years and have done a couple of electrics but the bending has kept me away from an acoustic guitar so far. Nearest I got was this dulcimer. Being lazy the...

How did you learn to turn?

I learned the basics at school woodwork then had a 37 year break. I found a 3 speed record lathe(DML24) at a good price and got started again. There was some tools came with it and Keith Rowley's book ''Woodturning a Foundation Course". That was enough to reawake the urge to turn. My sharpening...

    Record resin quick vice

Never seen one before but by the looks of it its a plastic vice for the most basic DIY. Better than no vice at all but would be very limiting. Looks like you bolt the black base to the worktop and the vice attaches to that with the cam thingey. Play around with it and see what works. Regards John

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I was a bit the same in my early days of turning. The bug bites and you are on the lathe at every spare minute you have. The result is masses of turnings to dispose of. After a while all the friends and family are at saturation point and you have to slow down the production line. These days I am...

    Lathe Tool Storage Rack

I used an old 2 drawer filing cabinet as it is on wheels and put a tool rack on top for the tools. Chucks, faceplates and stuff in the drawers. Wheel it to where is handy to reach the tools when turning. Regards John

Dado joint on a router table

I have to agree with the above. It can be done and dusted with hand tools by the time it takes to set up some kind of router jig. If you were doing a whole heap of them then by all means use machines to save time. Regards John

    Grinding distances

I dont use the Oneway but sharpening any chisel on a wheel is trial and error. Offer the bevel up to the wheel(switched off) and adjust rests/jig to get the whole bevel on the wheel. Then turn on and just a quick touch of bevel on wheel. Check the mark ground goes all the way up the bevel to the...

    Couple of vises

Both of those are quality vises. The second one looks like a Sheldon. If yours are as good as those then your vise requirements are sorted. Dirt and rust scrub off. Bit of lube and good to go. Perhaps paint if you are so inclined. Regards John

Am I out of touch ;-)

It may be down to something like google translate if the hammer was made in an exotic location. Regards John

Does the look of a tool/machine affect your buying decision?

The wife keeps a set of pink tools in her sewing room. The idea was I would not borrow them. Well if I need pliers or a screwdriver in the house I know where to go. The idea has been partially successful as so far they have not migrated out to the shed. Regards John

Dado joint on a router table

Plenty ways to do it. Handsaw and chisel, Table saw and chisel, Mitersaw and chisel. Those 3 can be refined by finishing up with a router plane but its not essential. Can be done on a router table and at a push with a router hand held. I listed them in the order I prefer but different folks will...
