    Tool collecting addiction

Guilty as charged. Way too many chisels, too many planes, too many saws and too many musical instruments. I am a sucker for old tools that need fixing up. Slowed down now due to lack of space in the shed. That said I have just discovered how nice wooden spokeshaves are and they hardly take up...

    Surface Planer Good Deal?

I guess I am not in touch with uk prices. If a big solid 8'' long bed surface planer (jointer) like that came up here at that price I would reckon it a right bargain. Long as it is in working order and all that. Little bit of surface rust can be the buyers friend. Not hard to clean up and gives...

    Surface Planer Good Deal?

I dont know the brand but saw that its made in Taiwan. Looks like a good unit. The ad missed all the important info like power and dimentions but looks like an 8'' to me. If it runs and suits your power supply I would say its a pretty good deal. They are basically quite simple machines with not...

    Cricket bat bench polisher

I thought you just rubbed in a bit of linseed oil. Do you need a machine for that?

    Another recycling centre bargain..

I made one with a bit of old bandsaw blade as getting my hands on ready made turning saw blades here in Australia is almost inpossible and If I could it would be very expensive. I found I had to take a saw file and ease the rake of the teeth as they are just too grabby for hand sawing. 6 TPI is...

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

I have turned some but there are about 2000 to choose from. All are pretty hard (very hard compared to European woods) and have big shrinkage rates. A lot also have gum veins that can be full of hard resin. Did not get called gum trees for nothing. That looks like them in your photos. A look at...

    How would you make this...

As said easy on a lathe. Can be done with a router and simple circle jig but perhaps some router experience is required before ripping in. Regards John

    Awkward Space Storage Solutions?

Regardless of storage systems Its bare block and brick so damp may be a problem. Keeping it open with air circulation would be the way I would go. I would not be putting good tools in there. That said let no space go to waste just think about goes in there. Regards John

    Unusual horned plane

European style and sometimes referred to as a German style plane. Emir was the first one I came across and I think it was made in England. I think the family was connected to Emmerich on the continent. Picked it up in a junk shop and was the start of my wooden plane journey. Can't quite make out...

    Table saw or bandsaw?

Totally agree with the above. I will just add that for deep cuts power is important so the more the better. 1500w would be nice for what you want. Some turning blanks plus other ripping. Turning blanks dont need to be round just cut off the corners for an 8 sided blank. If you do cut circular...

The story of an old, long-used, infill plane...

Nicely restored. Looks like it had an interesting life and someone has tried another pivot location for the brass cap at some stage. Has a good solid look to it and should be ready for another couple of lifetimes work. Regards John

    Budget hardpoint saw for carpentry

Bacho. Mine does not have the Ergo handle either but it cuts well. Would be the best hardpoint I have had. Regards John

    Favourite hand plane and why

Thought I was bad having 4 of them. It was 5 but I gave one away. There are also 2 wooden coffin smoothers and an old Mathieson infill smoother. I am also a sucker for old tools in need of rescue. I admit to likely having more planes than I really need but I could not single one out as a...

Your favourite thing you have made from reclaimed timber 🤔 📸

Nice. Have you found they are another of the habit forming parts of woodwork? I am tripping over the barn things around my place. I only now make them for other people. Well thats the current plan but likely there will be some back sliding. Regards John

Made quite a lot of stuff with reclaimed wood. I do a few cigar box guitars from mostly recycled wood. Regards John

    Garden Find - 810g Warrington Hammer's Age?

31oz is a beast of a hammer. I had always looked at the warrington as a small hammer for finer work. Never knew they came that big. Regards John

Anyone recognize the brand? B&T GRAY SHEFFIELD (BACKSAW)

Have not heard of them and could not find them either. Trademarks Some tool sellers had their names on the tools they sold even if that tool was made by someone else. Anyhow nice old saw. I do like your saw nut holder and am so going to steal that idea. Somehow until now the idea of them all...

    Simple finish.

So right. Most timbers darken over time when exposed to UV. Just a fact of woodworking life. Anyhow if Danish oil is already in the shed then use that and follow up with a wax polish. Give it about 7 days after the last DO coat for a full cure before the wax is applied. Regards John

Wood carving hand tools: Vintage vs. NEW / Modern

I dont have carving tools but most of my bench chisels are good old Sheffield steel for the most part. Couple of Sweedish and Australian in the mix too. I also have new Narex and Kirschen chisels but at work I cant see them doing any better than the old ones. My old ones got my woodwork done...
