I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

Looks like this is turning into a sharpening thread and we all know they can roll on for ever about what method is best and we mostly talk them round in circles. That said its a woodworking fact of life that you have to have some sharpening method to be able to work wood. Turning tools...

I only want to turn wood into dowel, otherwise round bars

You will have to learn a method of sharpening or you just can't turn. That is the stark truth of it. Turning tools will go dull in a few minutes. Most cost effective way is with a bench grinder. Get or make a tool rest where you can adjust the angle.Bench Grinder Sharpening Tool Rest Jig for 6"...

    Titanium hammers?

I would go for a steel hammer with a wood handle. Hickory is the best wood for axe and hammer handles. I have never seen let alone used a titanium hammer but I reckon it would give the bank account more of a bashing than the nail. Regards John

    Brings back fond memories?

I still have 2. One was my dad's and the other I bought back in 1976 when I got my first place and had to do some renovations. I still use them as I prefer to use imperial for woodwork when I can. The wood on both is getting a bit brown and I have been on the lookout for a new one but no luck so...

The end of woodwork as we know it?

Fair bit of banjophobia flying around. Forget the negative thoughts and give it a try. Who knows you may like it. Regards John

Border around pillar drill stand to stop sawdust?

Seriously its not worth the bother. Just get a broom. You will still have to sweep up what falls outside the catchment so you wont be saving any time. Regards John

    Confession….I have a tool addiction

I think its something a lot of us get in varying degrees. In my early days at woodworking it was not a problem as I had little spare cash so I only bought what was really needed. Then I saw people restoring old planes and saws and I became a sucker for rescuing old tools. Getting a beat up tool...

Low cost DIY Router Table lift facility

Its a question of what you want to spend. If you are going to be doing a lot of routing then may be better to invest a bit more than if its just the odd job now and then. I only use a router when I have to so kept it modest. I use the extension wing of my tablesaw and the saw fence gets used...

    Eucalyptus

Its a very broad range with some beautiful timber and some not worth the bother. Just saying eucalyptus and not knowing which one could be anything from really good to utter c#@p. Try some wood data base searching. The list of species is quite long. List of Eucalyptus species - Wikipedia That...

Oil and rags catching fire you tube video

I am aware of the risk from fire fighting training and put my rags in a bucket of water. It was good to see that experiment and actually see the process in action. It also showed that a metal bin would be a safer option and give you a better chance of getting the thing outside before the plastic...

    Planer fence

The alloy fences are not as robust as those with cast iron so like Fitzroy says perhaps you are flexing the fence as you push against it. Set it square to the table and practice a bit with some scrap bits of pine. Regards John

    Any advice welcome

I think you are well shot of that lathe and even if it had worked it would have been a source of frustration. Good to see you are looking to get some instruction as well. I would advise you hold off on buying a lathe until you have had a bit of hands on and some advice from other turners. Places...

    Any advice welcome

It is only 250w so you will have to take things easy. Perhaps a sharp gouge or a smaller carbide chisel would be easier on the motor. I had a look at a youtube vid and the guy was turning on one with a small gouge without stalling it. Thing should get easier as you get a feel for it and that...

Vertical alignment of headstock and tailstock.

I would look for machine leveling feet. Sitting on an unlevel surface will always cause problems. Being able to adjust all 4 feet with a spanner is easier than messing about with shims. Regards John

    Warranted Superior Historians assemble!

A nice old saw. Got a nice handle. Bit more rust than the Tyzac but still worth a go. If there is any problem with teeth snapping off then look about for a replacement bit of plate. Quite a few people chop up modern hardpoint saws for that. Regards John

Triton Router - TR0001 - Can you over tighten the collet??

I cant see how tight the collet is would have anything to do with the thing starting or not. I suspect there is a loose contact somewhere in the table/plug/NVR switch arrangement or like Triton says the plug and flex. . Intermittent starting is a poor contact someplace. Regards John

Old Stanley’s or new Quangsheng planes? Which do I need?

Stanley was an American company. They later opened production in the UK to expand market share. Other countries too. They were not all that kind to Mr Bailey when they gained control of his design due to being a bigger player. Now others can make similar planes so the wheel turns. People have...

problems with union graduate lathe and patriot chuck

As Paul said above check the headstock thread for damage. More chance its the old thread than a new chuck or thats where I would first look. A small ding in a thread can be carefully filed back into line. Regards John

Filler for those on a budget.

Noted for future use. Paper is wood after all. May have to wait until "her indoors" is away for borrowing the blender however. Regards John
