Looking for turning profile templates for sale

Not aware of anything for sale but most turners make up templates to mark off the work especially if you are doing more than one item. A Drawing Template For Spindle Turning | Article | Carbatec Regards John

    Flooring

It surely is not the easy way to do it and no guarantee they will not bow and twist. I would expect it will move a lot. The other point is there is no tongue and groove. There are reasons flooring is done the way it is. I would be looking at either getting ready made floorboards and doing it...

    advice for beginner turners

Keith Rowley's Foundation course was the book that got me started. Was lucky that it was in the box of tools that came with the secondhand lathe. I had done a little bit of turning at school woodwork about 40 years before but the advice on safe ways to turn and sharpening should get you going...

Veritas marking gauge looses its setting

You can always make your own. I made that pair over 10 years ago and they still work fine. I like to have a few around as it saves having to try and go back to a previous setting. Among the shop bought gauges I do have a brass and steel one but its a Chinese made one. Never given me any trouble...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Not usually a fan of resin poured things but that looks pretty good. Regards John

Dust extraction hoods by the headstock, what do you use?

I just use the 4''hose from the extractor but I will likely do something similar to this as its nice and simple. Richard Raffan lathe & dust extraction - YouTube Regards John

    Tormex

Its not good practice to leave water in the trough. I dont know if it actually damages the stone but the waterlogged bit of the stone will be heavier so things will be out of balance. Rust stains will be another issue. Regards John

    How would you fix this?

I agree with Bingy man. The door has been hung wrong way round. There should be a solid block (the lock block) where the knobs and lock go. I would just start with a new door and make sure the lock goes on the proper side. They dont cost a lot and it will save a lot of bu&&ering around. Last...

    Marking knives

Old chisels make a good marking knife. Regrind the angle you want and make a handle that feels right for your hand. I like it for marking out fret slots. Before that I had a couple ground from old spade bits. I did think about mower blades too as the steel should be ok but the old chisel was...

    Using spanners

I guess its only a bit of time trying it out as you have some old spanners to hand. Regards John

    Using spanners

Cant quite picture what you are getting at. I can see the sharpened spanner trick doing the stem but how do you intend doing the ring with it. May be some ideas from this guy. How to Make and Use a Captive Ring Tool - YouTube Have to say I am no expert at captive rings only having done a...

    Knot advice please

I know my way around rope and knots but the design of that is problematical. Even if you could tie a knot tight enough the cord is going to stretch and the whole thing will be sloppy again as soon as its sat in. As said above you need some way to retension the cord as often as required. Regards...

    Floor Sander question

I hired one of the big drum sanders about 35 years ago and even had been given advice by someone else that had tried it. Definitely not as easy as it sounded. You have to keep the beast moving at an even pace. If you linger it gouges. Move across the grain or diagonal. Actually dry sanded it...

Optical illusion or just plane butchery?

The pillars of the Parthenon have a built in taper so they look strait. Regards John

Optical illusion or just plane butchery?

Provided the measurements and a square say its right then leave it. Remember perspective from school art. When the top is on then the eye will not be so drawn to it. Regards John

CBM Wheel is this a stupid idea ?

In theory mounting a CBN wheel on the lathe would work but it would be a pain in the @#$3 as you would have to take the work off the lathe every time you sharpen. You would spend as much time putting things on and off the lathe as you would turning. As said above get a basic bench grinder with...

    Out of square Narex 8116

A small chisel like that will not take much time to square up on a rough diamond plate with or without a honing guide. Could send it back for a square one if you like but after that its up to you to keep it square. Be a good learning exercise to do it yourself. Getting it sharp out of the box...

Circular saw base, steel or aluminium

I dont have experience with evoloution saws or even an aluminium base plate. I would pick the one with the least amount of flex in the base plate. Regards John

Putting shelves on a terrible wall

Just be honest with him as you cant defy gravity. Books are heavy and its a tall order hanging book shelves on reasonably good walls so perhaps suggest floor standing book shelves. Regards John

Serious help needed from any guitarist

I came late to music and got talked into starting on ukulele about 11 years ago. Only 4 strings to worry about and with a shorter neck there is less finger span required so making chords is easier. Its also very social and there are uke bands all over the place where you can learn as you go...
