    First ever turning!

A bog standard bench grinder will do fine for sharpening turning tools. Grinding Station - Sharpening Woodturning Tools, Chisels & Cutting Irons - YouTube I basically do what this guy does for turning tools and the $50. 8'' grinder I bought 20 years ago is still going strong. I have a white...

No space for a cabinet saw…

As you say and I did in the early days stash it away under the bench and used it outside at times. Portability is the big plus with a site saw but having a saw set up and ready to go makes life easier. One thing not mentioned is cost and back then a site saw was what I could afford and I made...

No space for a cabinet saw…

No conversion other than sticking a router in the wing that was already there. Point I was making is that with a small site saw you still need enough space to be able to work on it. Infeed, outfeed and side support space. This full size saw is not really taking up more space to work the the old...

No space for a cabinet saw…

I had a ryobi site saw many years ago and actually did a lot of work with it. I very soon got tired of having to lug it out and set it on some surface to do some work so got a base for it. Having a smallish table surface I usually had to rig up an outfeed surface and at times side support. Thats...

    Shop made wooden holdfast

I guess with wooden holdfasts the odd failure now and then is to be expected but the idea of the reusable head is good. Perhaps a wood with more spring for the next shaft. Ash, hickory, or mulberry. Anything that is rated as a good wood for tool handles would do. Regards John

    Traditional Bed frame

I have made a few beds over the years and the last couple I used bed hook hardware. Anything larger than a single has to come apart simply to get it through the doorway. 12 years on and no problems with the hardware. The design of the hooks means they keep tight with weight on them. There is a...

How do they get away with this?

Cant answer at the moment as I think I am being watched. I will get back on this one when I have made the lead foil hat. Trust nobody John

Help please - truing the edges of a box

As said above its a combination of of getting the miter angle right AND the length of the opposite side/ end the same. A shooting board can get the angles right but only stop blocks will get the lengths the same. I spent a long time messing about with shooting boards and getting the angles spot...

    Router table or insert

If you are tight on shed space then an insert on your tablesaw wing. Takes up no extra space, could be cheaper than a router table, a nice big surface to work on and you can use the tablesaw fence to attach the router fence to. Not really much to a router table at its very basic level...

Charnwood W815 lathe keeps blowing fuses :(

Did not realize it was a new lathe. First priority is get them to fix or replace. Thats what warranty is about. Hope you get things sorted without too much fuss. Regards John

Charnwood W815 lathe keeps blowing fuses :(

Its only a 250w motor so 5 amps is likely right. The fact its blowing fuses suggests something is wrong. Best thing is have someone that knows a bit about electric motors take a look at it. Regards John

    Small mobile workbench

Here is a no cost moxon. As to the bench a folding workmate and perhaps a bit of ply for the top. If you screw a batten under the middle of the ply you can clamp that in the workmate to give a work surface. Regards John

    Medieval crossbow replica

That statement of yours got me thinking and its likely aiming for a very high draw weight in a very short bow. Has to be harder to do. Its also likely that back in the day the original was made they had access to better yew and were further along that learning curve. I know you are trying to...

    Medieval crossbow replica

Pity but thats bow building. For what its worth I had a lot of failures but it sure feels great the times it works. Regards John

    Goodie bag

Just checked the markings on the norris panel plane and the top of the adjuster knob is also marked. The fact yours has an adjuster leans it more likely to be norris as the likes of mathieson, preston, spiers and others did not as far as I have seen. A lot of earlier norris planes dont have the...

Charnwood 619, can't square cut on left of blade!

I had to google a bit to see what the saw looked like. From what you say it is likely the slider is not in line with the blade and the slots in the cast iron top. I would say you have to align the slider slot with the blade and the table slot. It may require shims to get there if there is no...

Advice on loading above tree roots

Trees in the wrong place cause problems and those problems get bigger along with the tree. A bigger tree is harder and more expensive to remove. None of mine were close enough to the house to break up the footings but were towering over the house, blocking the sewer with roots, filling the...

    Goodie bag

A very lucky score. The infill certainly looks like a Norris smoother. Should be marked on the blade and chipbreaker and sometimes the the brass cap. Leastwise my norris panel plane is but perhaps the earlier ones were not marked as much. In fact they are all good planes. Dont let a little bit...

Saw dust - should I be worried?

Other option is saw it outside when the weather permits. Regards John

    Old-school floor scraping

Stanley 74 floor plane. Stanley 74 floor plane Finding one would be the hard part however. A stanley 80 scraper could be used as said by thetyreman. I give my benchtop the occasional clean up with one but the thought of doing a whole floor with it has my back and knees in spasm already...
