No. 080 Scraper, serrated blade? History / Uses

I am aware of toothing planes but have never seen a toothing blade for a No 80 scraper. It looks a bit thicker than the normal 80 blade so perhaps it was a bit of home innovation. Regards John

Are there any Bowyers or fellow fletchers on UKW ?

When I did a few laminated bows I read that only use fresh glue and the glueup had to be cured in a hot box at over 40*C. All the wood lams were also heated up before the glueup. The heat cure was to ensure the joint stayed flexible. When you think about it there is nothing more demanding of a...

Are there any Bowyers or fellow fletchers on UKW ?

I used to shoot and make traditional bows. Have made traditional self bows and few laminated bows. Done some wooden arrows and fletching too. Been about 15 years since I did my last build but happy to offer advice where I can. While there looks like a few on here that can help you a bit it may...

What Wood & How to Cut

Agree with the Padauk ID. As to cutting direction B will be quarter sawn and more stable. Direction A will show more grain pattern. If you planed the already split faces it will give a preview of what to expect cutting either way. Regards John

Do fix broken stuff or buy again?

If I can I fix but there are limits like do I have the skill and is the cost worth it. I would also be more inclined to try fixing a good quality tool than a tool that came from Aldi. I quite like the challenge of fixing things and most of my hand saws, chisels, and planes I picked up sometimes...

Interesting if slightly scary looking contraption

Car tyres are likely more robust than the tyres on normal bandsaw wheels. Regards John

Interesting if slightly scary looking contraption

I would like to see it working. From a distance. Cant picture how it breaks down pallets unless it cuts through the nails too. More likely just resaws the already broken down boards. Finding someone prepared to fork out 3K on it may take time. Regards John

ID-ing this wood and suggestions for project tweaks

Not sure of the wood but as food platters go it's not really all that practical. All those deep grooves to trap dirt. After a few attempts at cleaning its gonna look pretty sad. Just another example of woodworking to create online content. Regards John

    HEDGEHOG FAN FEATHERBOARD

I had to google the Hyundai saw and see that its got strait sided table slots. You could make a shoe from 12mm wide aluminum. Drill a hole and countersink it on the bottom. Then slit it up the middle going through the hole. Use a matching countersunk bolt to tighten the featherboard. As the...

    Traditional Bed frame

Bed bolts are still quite the thing in the USA. I looked into it a few years ago and they have fancy metal caps to cover the hole where the bolt head is. Could not find them for sale in Australia however. I did use the bolt idea in my workbench so I could take it apart for moving. Makes a rock...

    Turning a bowl

As Hornbeam says split it in half. Its good practice to avoid the pith (heart of the log) in the finished piece as cracks tend to start from there. A line at 90* to the line you drew aiming to cut out both hearts. If you intend storing the blanks then get rid of the pith now. Crotch pieces like...

    Buying a workbench

Actually sheet goods are not frowned on, especially as a first bench. A few layers of MDF ply or chipboard glued and screwed together is a recognized way to get you a good flat working surface. You can attach a nice wood trim around the edges to spruce it up if you like. Consider what a bench...

    First ever turning!

Most turning tools are HSS and a little heat will not harm them. Plenty turners have been using a grinder for a long time with no problems. With tool steel its true that when it changes colour the damage is done but with taking care and dunking it can be done. The aluminum oxide wheels also run...

    Buying a workbench

The whole point of building your own bench as an early project is to develop those woodworking skills. It also saves you money that can go towards other tools. Looking at the site they dont go into detail with only the one picture of the bench and while the top looks ok from the angle we can...

    Traditional Bed frame

Good point on the mattress size. There are so many non standard size ones you wonder if there is a standard. The mattress you have is the best starting point for measurements before cutting any wood. Regards John

    My first workbench

Better than my first bench was. A good bench is the heart of a woodworking space. The work gets easier and you feel better too. Regards John
