Mid range disc sander advice - (or maybe a disc/belt combi?)

While people have done this there are some down sides like speed and are you doing the saw any good. There is one low cost disc sander for those who have a lathe however. Cut out a disc of mdf, ply or other sheet goods (I used 35mm thick mdf) and mount it on a faceplate. Trim it up to round on...

Sharpening north west gouges & Chisels

I tend to steer clear of sharpening threads but as some others have pointed out its something you just have to learn if you want to work wood. As a starter the best option would be to find someone that can sharpen them and at the same time show you how it's done. Regards John

    Converting a pillar drill?

Thats what I would try as a first option. You just have to always remember to undo the locking handle on the table before pumping it up. Regards John

Basic set up required for newbie to cut small 3-4mm thick birch plywood

Depends on the quantity you want to produce. Most of us not into mass production use the tools we have like bandsaws, scrollsaws, drills and sanders but that takes time and it is hands on for each piece. However time for us is not critical. If you want to mass produce then I think the laser...

    Extention bed....er....?

Think only some pictures is gonna sort this one out. My understanding of a bed extention is to extend the bed length and the tail stock mounts on top of it thus extending the length between centers. There are attachments for outboard turning that the banjo and tool rest can be mounted on and...

Just normal white vinegar diluted with water also gets the job done. Regards John

    How did we do?

Think you did OK. I have not heard of Whitmore but its British made and looks like its got all the bits that makes a plane work so no reason it wont make a good user. Most of my planes came to me in similar condition. Better get scrubbing. Regards John

How would you wall mount this?

Much as I like french cleats they are not the best for this job as the unit will sit out from the wall. Being backless stuff will be able to fall down the back. A batten and mirror plates as scholar has shown above would be my pick. Brass plates will show off the oak nicely. Regards John

    Bevelling on a bandsaw

I mostly use the bandsaw for angled ripping as it saves me taking the splitter and top guard off my older style tablesaw to do it. Have the fence on the down hill side of the blade for the wood to ride on. As others have pointed out the blade needs to be sharp and the saw properly set up. The...

Garage conversion to workshop (long road)

Good idea with leaving the door. I saw one where the left the garage door and walled across about 1.5m back leaving a storage space for bikes and stuff. Regards John

    Suggestions Please - Curved Wood

Laminate is the way to go. Thinner the wood strips the easier it will bend and the less spring back you will have. A lot of production chairs are made that way. Make a form the shape you want and clamp the glued strips to it. Plenty of online info on how to do it. I would say lams about 2 to 3mm...

I got hold of some green wood today. PVA glue as a sealer?

When I started turning I was told to get the proper end grain sealer. Thought it was a bit pricey. Anyhow when that tin ran out I followed the advice of some others that said use whatever you have. Paint, out of date glue or end grain sealer I cant say any one is better than the other. All are...

    Jointer and thicknesser options

If space and cost are issues then a thicknesser is the best option. Using a sled the thicknesser can be both planer and thicknesser. How to make a planer sled | Flatten Large Boards - YouTube Planer thicknesser combos are out there but the cheaper models will be a bit of a let down...

    Marples M Hand Planes

I have an old red No4. The casting is a bit thicker than a Stanley. It is a good worker and at least as good as a stanley. The handle is nicely rounded and well made. Regards John

Throat plate for table saw mitre

I did likewise and built a 45* sled. Being a sled running in both slots it also does a better job than just the miter gauge. The sled only has a rear fence and the kerf goes all the way to the front so its set the blade at 45 and slide up the sled. Regards John

    Two stroke engines, opinion sought

I know you said dont mention a battery job but its worth thinking about. Over the years I have had a few 2 stroke strimmers and while they are great for the first few years they become a pain in the @&$£ when they play up. They usually time the "I am not going to work today moment'' to cause...
