    Bandsaw Blades

I wont ask what you want to do but I will ask what size is your saw. Reason being is blade tension. My 14'' saw will not quite tension a 3/4'' blade although the specs say it will. My most used general purpose blade is a 3 tpi 1/2''. Does over 90% of what I need. Regards John

How the finest saws are made

Good video. I was surprised by the use of leggo jigs to position the blades in the etching machine. Neat trick. Regards John

    Do you sell your stuff?

I only sell when someone asks me to make something for them. Mostly cigar box guitar kind of thing. At times I whip up a bunch of tea light candle holders on the lathe when the wife's family history group are doing a charity stall. I have had people come and ask for particular things only to...

Will I need 2 chucks? Large and small.

The Keith Rowley Foundation Course is likely the best book to get any new turner started. I would also say to any woodturner that has not yet read it, give it a go. Regards John

Spear & Jackson saw plate age?

You are likely right about the age so I cant really add much to the history. They did start making the skew back version in the 1880tes so yours is likely older than that. I have never had a saw that old in my hands. As to handles there may be some ideas here. My Little Saw Museum… | The Saw...

Making a workbench that needs to be light

I would think the original idea of saving weight on the floor is not as big an issue as you think. For starters you need space at the bench to work so big machines should not be that close to it to be an issue. If you can walk about without the floor feeling bouncy things should be fine. There...

Will I need 2 chucks? Large and small.

Look for a chuck that comes with a few sets of jaws. VIPER2PACK Scroll Chuck Package in carry case - Kendal Tools & Machinery That kind of thing. One chuck can be made to do a whole lot just by using other jaws. Great as chucks are it is also worth exploring the older ways of mounting wood on a...

    Royal Navy Bone Saw.

I was about to agree it was a hacksaw but after a search I found surgical saws in all kinds of forms. A lot were frame saws and some like tenon saws. I dare say back in the day some would just have been carpenters or butchers saws roped in for medical service when required. Antique French...

    Epoxy thickener

Wood dust has been my go to and have seen some use coffee grounds and even brass filings. Small cracks I use CA glue with a bit of wood dust. Larger ones get 2 pac epoxy glue as that is already thicker than resin. I have not gone down the casting road filling large voids or river table type...

    Ebonising oak

It is water soluble so after you get the degree of black you want(more coats=blacker) you can apply any oil coating or oil based varnish you like. I used a marine varnish. I did not want to take a chance on water based products. A chemical reaction between the iron oxide and the oak tannin...

    Ebonising oak

Yes I should have mentioned the washing of the steel wool. In my case I had already had the steel wool in the jar for about 24 hours before I found out that bit of info so I just carried on without washing. I should think washing would speed up the breakdown of the wool and perhaps prevent the...

    New RP bandsaw.

In over 20 years as a bandsaw owner I have found that a slightly larger saw does not really take up much more floor space. You also need space front and behind the saw to actually shove wood through the thing. Get a small saw and pretty soon you will wish you had gone the next one or two up...

    Ebonising oak

You could try a few experiments. I have only tried it the one time and I did not mix the tannin in but brushed it on before doing the acid/iron mix. As the tannin was not dry when the mix was brushed on suggests that the tannin could be mixed in. I just followed the method I had seen in a few on...

    Drying spalted beech

A very nice looking slab. Spalting can be a bit of a gamble as the line between great looks and real rot is a thin one. Hopefully the salt water has arrested the process. A tabletop with looks like that would be any woodworkers dream. Regards John

Sanding discs on the lathe, do you glue them on or use something like velcro?

I tried that for a while but the chuck jaws end up compressing the tenon and the disc develops a wobble. My next go was an MDF disc permanently on a face plate. Still spinning true after about 15 years. I use the velcro backed discs. I know that it can slightly round over edges but with a light...

    Hobbit house

Some years ago I did the Hobbiton movie set tour of the hobbit village in New Zealand. Mr Jackson wanted everything to be as authentic as possible. Even down to real flowers and veg in the gardens. I was very impressed with some of the woodwork. The pub was a real eye opener for any woodworker...

Newbie with a block plane Q

Welcome to the forum. I will repeat the does it work as it is question. By that I mean can it take an even shaving. If so then just use it as it is and every time you sharpen lean a bit harder on the high side. Over time it will come back to being more square. If you checked any of my blades...

    A wooden bandsaw ... scary ...

I saw one of his other videos and he did build a wooden jointer. My grandfathers carpenters shop had a wooden bandsaw and also a wooden saw bench. Both belt driven by a big single cylinder paraffin motor. Wooden workshop saws would have been fairly common up to the mid 20th centuary. Regards John

    Scotch broom timber properties

I am guessing that it is a bow project you have in mind. I also could not find anything on wood database but I have heard that bows can be made from it. I recall mention of it in the bowyers bible and I think primitive archer too. If you can find a good sized bit its worth a go. Regards John
