    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

It all sounds like hard work to me. If ever there was a need for a tablesaw and dado blades then this is it. We are talking 200m of trench here at one pass as a dado stack will do easily. Say 3 x 200m with a router. I would rather just buy the I beams. Regards John

    Workbench finishing

BLO is all you need and has been the traditional finish for as long as there have been benches around. Avoid shiney slippery surfaces as it makes holding the workpiece in place harder. On a previous bench I used a 2 pac floor coating as I thought thats hard and will last. It was beautiful, shone...

    Alternative to Bench Vise

As said any good vice should close at the top first to resist wracking. Adjusting the chops/cheeks is the way to fine tune it. The cheek at the bench side should be at 90* to the bench top and the outside one slightly angled so the top closes first. With tension the vice wracks itself flush...

    making gaming pieces

I did one a couple of years ago but decided to keep the pieces simple without faces. I did put eyes on the king but that was it. Some I saw in Norway were very simple the pieces just being river pebbels or bits of bone. Quite a few the board was just a bit of leather or cloth with the grid...

    TS2500 - Height Adjustment

Lube is a great start to get it turning. Give it a good squirt of wd40. If that gets it going and frees things up then later you can wipe it or blow it off then use dry lube. Not just the thread but any parts that look like they should pivot. Avoid getting lube on the belt pulleys. Regards

    French Wrench

Any better quality pics? Its hard to see detail. If the inside of the curved bit is sharp then some kind of pipe or cable cutter that gets rotated around cutting as it goes. Regards John

    Oak. Looks nice.

    Hand Tool Wall Cabinet

I am sure that many woods would be suitable it just depends on the look you are after. I have also seen the whole thing done in plywood. Sketch up a plan to see how much wood you need then compare prices. One cost saver would be say ply or pine then some nice hardwood trim. Regards John

What are these living in my shed?

Over here we would not want mice in the shed as they would attract snakes. This shed visitor commissioned a nest box. Regards John

    Watching accident videos

I agree that with some grain directions there will be more downwards force but if the cut is supported as in not likely to tilt on the table by said force then its only going to be a slower cut. Regards John

    Table saw router addition/conversion

Mounting a router in the tablesaw wing is a great space saver. I did the same only the formica wing was already part of the saw setup. I made a fence that clamps on to the saw fence. Used the NVR switch off an old Aldi router table. Regards John

    Watching accident videos

I think you will find the issue was sticking a round bit of wood into the blade so the downwards force is not supported. You can cut on a bandsaw with the grain in any direction as well as freehand cutting provided the workpiece sits flat on the table. Kind of what bandsaws are made for. Only...

Using a cordless drill in a drill press stand

Saving space you say, well a benchtop pillar drill will only have a slightly larger footprint than that drill stand. I reckon the Bosch benchtop drill would be taking the same amount of space and it has dial in speed and everything else that you expect from a pillar drill. If I have access to...

Brace bit in a regular, electric or pillar drill ?

Jim, The answer is do not even try it. Brace bits are designed to draw themselves into the wood by the small cone shaped spiral on the tip. In a power drill it will likely grab the wood with destructive effect. Fair chance you can injure yourself too. Regards John

    Help with Stanley Plough Plane

How was the board secured? Are you sure the fence was not contacting the edge of the bench? Looking at the test piece the plane does work. Regards John

    Trouble with Beams

I did luck out on the No 40 and got it at about £50 on the bay 7 or 8 years ago. Was not really looking for one but when you get the chance you pounce. They are also a bit rare here in Australia. It really takes a deep but narrow bite. Scoops out really thick chunks. That said sometimes a wider...

How to test drive a chainsaw

Ask the guy if you can see it cut some wood before making the deal. Let him do the cutting and you watch. As with all secondhand purchases there is always a bit of chance involved but it is reasonable to expect it to work. Regards John

    Bandsaw Transport

As Tom said table off is a must. Found this out the hard way when I got my first full size saw. Those trunnions are quite fragile. My current saw when shipped new came mostly complete (even had the blade on) but I had to attach the table myself. Regards John

    Trouble with Beams

The German style planes make good scrub planes by just putting a decent camber on the blade. Almost as good as the Stanly 40 itself. I got along fine with the old horned plane for years as my scrub but I could not resist the No 40 that was going for a song. Then round out the collection with...

    Hand Held Vac

Most of the hand held vacs even a dyson will happily suck up sawdust but will choke with wood shavings. Most shop vacs have too small hoses for a lot of shed related cleanups as well. Brush and dust pan are my preferred clean up implements. Regards John
