How would you make this oilstone box lid with hand tools?

I have made a couple but left the top plane and flat. One like that would require a moulding plane for the top. To hollow out the top trace round the stone then knife mark. Then drill out most of the waste. Forstner bit makes the best job of this. Then its chisel work and for a nice clean inside...

    Well that's embarrassing !

I feel a bit better now as I now only have 4 #4s. The 2 wooden coffin smoothers and the infill smother dont really count. Sometimes its good to have a couple as when one gets dull just pick up another. The crunch comes when they all need sharpening.

    Eucalyptus

Dont see why not. The cut bits look quite clean. Here in Australia ghost gum is not much used apart for perhaps firewood. Likely because there are few strait bits in a tree. I would think furniture may be a challenge but I have never tried it or even know anyone who has. It would likely be worth...

Using a skew with one hand behind your back!

Brag away. To be honest I am impressed. After almost 20 years at turning the skew can still sometimes catch me out so two hands for me on that tool. Regards John

Pitting on back of vintage rebate plane iron

As the rest are saying just sharpen and use and see how it goes. If you have to then grind off the worst few mm near the edge as it looks pretty good after that. Doing rebates you take quite a heavy shaving and even if there are some visible lines in the bottom of the rebate they will not be...

    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

Fair point. Makers would always be thinking about cost of production. As to metal soles being stuck on wooden planes it was done by a lot of plane owners to reduce ware and time out keeping the sole flat. Dont think it would be necessary for most of us weekend woodworkers as we would not be...

    unusual Bailey transitional plane ?

The metal sole would have been put on by the owner. The whole point of the transitional plane was to have a wooden sole. The plane makers were trying to win over the traditional wood plane users. Regards John

    Opinions on wood:leather bonding

I gave both the leather and the wooden jaws a wipe over with acetone to remove any oils then used PVA glue. Clamp the vice shut. Next day trim the edges of the leather. Ten years on and still ok. Regards John

    Shortening a fence

It does look like a waste of a good fence but if you are set on it then this is my view. If you have not used a circular saw before then use a hard point handsaw. Any cheap circ saw would do for a one off job. If you can see yourself using a circ saw for other tasks then get a better one. Nail...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That looks seriously nice. The turning is very precise. I take it the tuning slide maintains its position just by being a tight friction fit . Regards John

Another workbench on youtube but what a bench

There are a lot of statement benches out there but that one actually looks to be very practical. He said himself its over the top and expensive but by letting it promote his skills it will likely be worth the investment. I usually argue for plain and functional but I could live with that in the...

    Sharpening advice for dabbler

Thats more than I paid for a lot of my saws and chisels. I even have a block plane that was less than 6 quid. Anyhow prices like that should spur you on to learn sharpening. Regards John

    Alternative to Bench Vise

I also got on to the bench bull some years back and find it very handy. In essence its just the back half of a moxon so a few years later I went the whole hog. Both see a fair bit of use but I am still not going to ditch the bench vice. Regards John

Tiny gaps in solid worktop, help.

As Pete says heat is the problem. Granite or similar either side of the stove also provides someplace to put down hot pans. Regards John

    Daylight saving time?

It is a bit of a pain. It takes the dog a week to adjust to meal times. Big countries with a few time zones it gets even more complex. Each state here does it their own way so even the change over dates are not the same. The town of Broken Hill in NSW keeps South Australian time as the nearest...

    Workbench finishing

Dont mind a wee nip of Appleton estate or Mount Gay myself after a day in the shed. My shed can reach temps in excess of 50 C at times and there has been no problem with the blo bleeding. Bench is about 10 years old now so likely has had a couple of touch up coats on top of the initial 2. Like...

    1959 BR(W) hammer restored.

Nice job on the hammer. Using a hammer or cold chisel that has mushroomed like that there is a risk of copping a metal splinter in the eye. Regards John

French Cleat question - biscuit spacers?

Cant see it as being worth the bother if you are going to clean off the dust now and then in any case. I have had french cleats for years and admit I drag a brush along the wall rail before hanging anything but thats it. Regards John

    37mm hole?

Yes thats the answer. I have a similar one. Topman Expanding Bit - 22mm to 76mm | Carbatec Dont use it much but when you do need an odd sized hole its worth its keep. Have not used it on perspex but it does a very clean hole in wood. I think a nice sharp new one should do a great job in perspex...
