    Preparing burr maple

If your firewood is stored under cover and out of the sun with good ventilation then thats as good a place as any. Branch wood can be a problem for furniture making but its great for turning. As said above seal the ends with something as soon as possible. Regards John

    Folding Leg Desk

By all means copy the table design but please dont copy the way he uses a tablesaw. We keep bagging the Americans for not having a guard or riving knife but no fence either is really going for that Darwin award. Actually on second thoughts dont copy that table either. Did look a bit on the...

    Folding Leg Desk

All the other methods of folding table involve turning the table over or at least on its side to fold the legs in so then you have to keep things quite light or its a 2 man job. Anyhow you got me thinking now so I searched and found this. Wizard Folding Table Desk Kind of another take on gate...

Cutting down the grain with a bandsaw - problem.

Anything you need to know about bandsaws this is the guy to Google for answers. Band Saw Clinic with Alex Snodgrass - YouTube He has quite a few video clips on line. One of my regrets is I had made most of the mistakes before I was aware of him. Regards John

    Folding Leg Desk

Old style gate leg table has been a common design for couple of hundred years. No reason It cant be used as a desk too. Folded up or should I say down that is about 200mm wide. There will be hundreds of designs of them online but they all follow a common theme. Central frame with swing out legs...

    Chuck upgrade

There are lots of old style mounting methods from before the time of modern chucks. Turning has been around a long long time. My first six months before I invested in a chuck I had to get by with a face plate and whatever I could cobble together. I found this ''Around the Woods'' site helpful...

    Table saw advice?

Running really short pieces through a table saw is something I have never been comfortable doing even after being around tablesaws most of my life. Better to leave the wood longer for the cut then trim to length after. Other safe way is with the work stuck to a sled. Regards John

    Bandsaw resaw blade dulled?

It will have taken the set off the teeth as they got squashed between the rollers, so I have a feeling it may be knackered in its current state. You could ask around if anyone is able to reset the teeth. Not something I have ever tried doing. Regards John

    What lathe for small jobs?

The Axminster is a small wood lathe and will do for pens and small stuff as said in the description. It will be able to do holes in those dowels you mentioned. That said most people with a lathe soon get a hankering to do bigger work so trade up to bigger lathes. I grew out of my first lathe in...

Table Saw w/ability to take a dado stack.

I have had a dado stack for at least 15 years but I tend to agree with Ollie. I only use it now and again as the setup is a fiddle. I do have some standard setups written down I keep in the box with the blade stack. For a big job its worth doing and when set up its way better than using a router...

    Mathieson Plane

Florin, Can't really see a lot in that pic. Really need to see the whole blade and wedge. Anyhow that lump of rust will flake off if you hit it a few times with a hammmer. Do it on a flat surface so as not bend it. That long arm part of the blade is not hardened like the cutting part...

    Mathieson Plane

Just had a second closer look (first pic) and the cutting iron looks really strange like its got a sharp bend. May explain why the wedge is half out. Any chance of some pics of the main and nicker irons plus wedges out of the plane? Regards John

    Mathieson Plane

As said above its a top of the range sash fillester. It also looks in good condition for its age so would not take much to get it working. Those screw arm planes are getting a bit rare now so its worth looking after. Being Mathieson its about as good as they get. Regards John

Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

Thats pretty much like the set I started out with. The oval skew I never could get to grips with and I still have it sitting in a corner someplace. I hear some like them so who knows. I did get a regular old tool steel skew with my first secondhand lathe so have used it ever since. Just have to...

Old Shipwreck found on beach Orkney

Diagonal planking persisted well into the 20th cent. One lair at about 90degrees to the other. Made a very strong construction. Expensive yachts, ww2 patrol boats and RNLI lifeboats spring to mind. That bit from Orkney would be quite a few hundred years old by the looks of it. Trennnel boat...

Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

Well spotted I should have taken a closer look at what the set contained. I saw HS steel and thought yep OK. I am still in favour of starting out with a set of the basic tools. Brand does not matter all that much as long as it has a roughing gouge, spindle gouge, bowl gouge, parting tool, skew...

Old Shipwreck found on beach Orkney

I hope the experts can get some useful information out of it and perhaps even find more of the ship itself. Back in the days of sail Orkney was well connected in maritime circles. A lot of ships called there before heading across the Atlantic. If anyone is ever there the museum in Stromness is...

Suggestions for a woodworking lathe tool set for a beginner

That would do to get you started. Get going and get to grips with sharpening turning tools then move up. Better learning sharpening on those than grinding away really expensive steel. Setting up a plane

I would set the faithful aside and have a go at getting the record going. Often all that good old planes need is a clean and the blade sharpening. Sharp has to be sharp however, like shave hairs off your arm sharp. As others have said faithfull planes have little quality control so its a bit of...
