On the topic of infill planes; CAST VS. DOVETAILED? STEEL VS. GUNMETAL? ADJUSTERS VS. NON?

I only have 2 infill planes. One is a dovetailed smoother that may be by Mathieson. Well the blade is but no markings on the rest. No adjuster but a nice plane to use. The other is a Norris panel plane, cast with adjuster. Again nice to use but I think the Norris style adjuster is not a patch on...

    First Workshop - advice needed!

I agree with Bingy man. Aiming to set up a complete workshop in one hit is not the way to start. It takes years to build up. What can you make with the tools you have now? Then pick a project slightly more ambitious that you feel you can tackle and perhaps buy another tool or machine to help get...

    Cleaning abrasives

I just found 2 old unused tubes that have gone hard so will give it a go. Up to now I have just used old shoe soles or rubber mat offcuts. I have a feeling that just about any rubbery compound will do the job. The mat offcuts were black and still cleaned the belts or discs. Regards John

    What lathe to buy

Kind of depends on a few things. The woodfast is twice the power (or the one I googled has) so thats a plus. It also looks a more solid machine. How many extras and what condition is it in? The cost difference must surely have to be mulled over too. Have a good close look at both before making...

    Repair chair leg

Clean off the glue then stick it back on. It will also need a couple of splines to reinforce the joint. Something a bit like this. Fixing a broken chair leg - YouTube As has been said I would only do it if it's my own chair. Too many potential problems fixing other peoples chairs. Regards John

New or old vintage drawknife ?

The old one will likely be better quality. The new one will also need sharpening so thats something you will have to get used to whatever way you go. My drawknife was a junk shop find. Making a propeller will take more tools than just a drawknife as its basically a roughing out tool. Well it is...

    Corner wardrobe build

You eat one time only at Ikea just to see what it's like. It's not bad but when its ticked off the list that will do. I have been to Skandinavia quite a few times and the food is kind of like my mum's cooking. That said Scandinavian breakfasts are really good and set you up for the day. Ikea is...

What angle should screws be with a 45d gallow shelf brackets?

Good advice but notch both ends of the brace then gravity holds it all together. Then a wooden pin either end to keep things in place. Will look better than screw heads showing plus be way stronger. Regards John

    Corner wardrobe build

Never seen a corner wardrobe so had a search for ideas. Corner Wardrobes - Transform Awkward Spaces for Storage - IKEA I think the corner bit will almost always be wasted space. For some rooms it could be the answer but if you can fit a strait one it will be a better use of space. Regards John

    Good workbench deal at £100?

Looks good. Bargain for sure. Now you just have to get ruthless and make space for it.

How far gone is too far gone for old wood lathes?

To me that looks too far gone. I am all for getting old things working but it helps if you start with a reasonable prospect of success. That looks a very outside chance. Keep looking there are better contenders out there. Those pulleys look like it ran with a flat belt so its very old. Just 2...

Opinions? Lumberjack 1/4" Electric Plunge Router Variable Speed 240V with Parallel Fence

Sight unseen can be taking a bit of a punt so I guess its down to how often you will expect to use it. If you do a lot of routing then perhaps something a bit more well known but fir just the odd bit now and then I would not exclude it. My main table router is just a Ryobi but I did check it out...

Opinions? Lumberjack 1/4" Electric Plunge Router Variable Speed 240V with Parallel Fence

1200w is plenty power for a 1/4''. Not knowing the brand my concern would be build quality so I would like to see one in the flesh before handing over the money. Regards John

Post a photo of the last thing you made

That looks good and you researched runes too. I made one a few years ago but did not go as far as runes. Only trouble is I cant get anyone keen enough to have a game. They all say whats that then loose interest when I offer to show them how to play. I think you did right with the simple design...

How not to drill a pen blank or turning your jacobs chuck into a hammer!

I agree Duncan. There is a lot of movement in the tailstock if it's not locked down. It really is not the way to do it. He is lucky to get away with just a broken drill and dented pride. That lesson will be well and truly locked in. Regards John
