    Primitive Marking gauge ?

Size of those teeth it would be hard to drag along wood and get a clean cut. Wondering if it may be a stone masons gauge. Has a home made look to it. Regards John

    Hand router plane...

That was good to see how they all compare. I have an old stanley so have never used any of the modern ones. Like the guy mentioned the shoe thingie on the stanley is not really doing much and is never on my plane. I have got used to the shortcomings of it so will likely never buy another router...

    Reducing tearout from router plane.

Never used a small router plane but that one having good handles would be better than some. I have an old stanley router plane and for general woodworking have never seen the need for a small router plane. If it is for small work then perhaps it will do but you may find the small ones a bit...

    cherry finish

As said hard wax oil would not be a bad choice but I guess it all depends on the look you are aiming for. There is a huge choice around now and it is a bit daunting making a choice. I like to keep it simple and the good part of oil finishes are how easy they are to maintain down the track...

Advice on Jet Washed Timber Cladding

For future use if you use the brush attachment with the jet washer you get a more even coverage as it keeps the spray head at the right distance from the surface. In your case if you cant reach the whole lot better not jet wash. Try a good scrub as has been suggested above and let nature do the...

    Yacht varnish indoors?

Like the others have said its good but takes a while to fully cure. I have used it on boat woodwork in the past but thought it would be good for a table so I gave myself extra time for the drying. Regards John

    Help!

A copy lathe uses a template to make lots of items all the same. That said it should still be able to do regular turning if it has a regular tool rest. If you post some picks then we will be more able to advise on just what it can and cant do. 550w should be able to turn bowls up to the lathes...

    Dowel making

I have the same one as kinverkid but dont think its the same brand name. Uses a tct cutter and as luck would have it it's same as the ones in my thicknesser. Some woods cut cleaner than others so at times the dowel can look a bit hairy. If they are for holding a joint together then that does...

    All things sanding

A lot depends on the work you do so this is just my experience. I am on my second cheap belt /disc sander. The disc gets a bit of use but I hardly ever use the belt. I also have a home made disc on the lathe that gets the most use as I can use a low speed so dont get burning. I really think most...

    Small Rug Beater

Was quite a common sight when I was a kid seeing some overworked housewife beating the bejazes out of a rug hung on the clothes line. Our mum would get us kids to do it on the promise of a bit of cake or something. I have not seen one like that however. Most of the shop bought ones were paddle...

    Flood proofing new shed

Some years ago I visited Vietnam where flooding is a regular seasonal event. The ground floor of most buildings is concrete with tiled floor and walls. After each flood they just sweep out the mud, hose things down and get on with life. Regards John

Pleated filter for SIP dust collector?

I got to thinking a while back that the paddles inside would likely lead to damage so now I just gently tap/slap around the outside with open hands. It would be good practice for bongo players. You can see the dust falling down into the plastic bag. Regards John

    Flood proofing new shed

The sad truth is any place that has flooded will be prone to doing it again at some time. Climate change making those floods more frequent. Site it as far up the block as you can and build it up on legs as tall as allowed. At the very least aim for the floor being above the peak of the last...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I can see a lot of work went into that. Looks like it would be great for sharpening saws. Older you get the more a raised up vice becomes a good thing to have. Regards John

    Festool Saw Stop Table saw

A fence is an essential part of any table saw not an optional extra. Walk away. Actually thinking more about they are selling a saw that is not fit for purpose so breaking consumer laws in most countries. Regards John

    Replacing rusty screws

Other than blowing out the holes with compressed air I would not go digging stuff out as that will leave the screws with less grip. If the shanks and threads are heavy with rust it may be better to replace with new. Finding slotted head screws can be a chore but places like ebay often have old...

    Considering selling up

I have kind of got over the addicted part of turning myself and now only turn bits n pieces for other projects and when friends and family ask for the occasional item. My view on it would be to hang onto the big lathe and just move on the specialized tooling like the vac chuck and any other...

    Vice lining?

To be honest I only put leather on the vice as I had a bit laying around. Bare wood is perfectly fine 99% of the time. On the rare times padding is required its easy to use a bit of cardboard or something. Regards John

1/4 inch router bit for mortises

Another way is first drill out most of the waste then use the router to clean it out. A 1/4'' router is ok for a smallish mortise but the bigger they get the more it will struggle. I use the drill a lot for doing mortises and clean out with a chisel. The chisel work cleaning out is not hard like...

    Vice lining?

Bare wood is as good as any and pine is more grippy than really hard woods. Leather is good if you are holding delicate bits of work. I lined my end vice with leather as I happened to have a bit and left the front vice bare wood so have both options. Leather is rough side holding the work. I...
