Conspiracy nuts. (split from Re: How does this work?)

Worried it will start a sharpening thread?

Thanks very much. I'll spend a bit of time looking into that.

Conspiracy nuts. (split from Re: How does this work?)

I listen to the late night phone in with Alan Beswick on BBC radio Lancashire occasionally. Every so often you get a spate of calls from people who believe the earth is flat. It's a thing. We are all being lied to by NASA apparently to keep us subjugated. Also sometimes ties in to a race of...

Conspiracy nuts. (split from Re: How does this work?)

I do quite a lot of rifle shooting and consider myself to be fairly okay at it, but the other week I had the opportunity to try pistol shooting. What amazed me was how bloody difficult it is! If it were not for them being illegal over here I could definitely see me getting well into it. I do...

What shall I do with two apple trees?

I would think you are right. I imagine anything smoked in Cedar smoke would taste like an air freshner!

    Interesting bit of wood

If it's that dense I bet it's blooming good firewood.

What shall I do with two apple trees?

Keep any shavings/smaller offcuts for smoking food. Apple smoke has a lovely sweet flavour.

    Cross cutting oak beam

I have recently cross cut and planked some 8x8 inch oak beams with a skil saw, then finished with a hand saw. It was easy. If you are worried about a straight/square edge clamp a straight edge to the piece of wood to act as a guide. I used an old spirit level.

Yet another “What wood is this”... sorry!

I can understand just walking through a country park may not be the background in tree identification needed. I've worked with in and around trees my whole life. I work in Forestry. If I couldn't identify at least native trees from bark in my line of work I'd look fairly stupid. and yes. At...

    Finish for a wooden work-bench

I used Tung Oil for mine. It worked. Not much else to add that isn't already said above. BLO should work fine.

Yet another “What wood is this”... sorry!

Bark can be very helpful. It certainly builds a picture and can help to confirm a picture based on grain etc. I'd argue that it is probably as helpful as a low resolution photo of grain on a website viewed on a phone screen. There are many species of tree that have very distinctive bark and...

Yet another “What wood is this”... sorry!

Hi Ron. No idea where to start with the first one... Could you post a front on picture of the bark from the second?

    Home made tomato soup

I'm tight as a ducks butt. I'd have eaten the two portions out of the sieve first so it didn't go to waste. Good roughage that.

    Sweet Chestnut

I'm no expert but I'd imagine, looking at how many massive knots there are going to be in that tree that there will be very few useable planks at 12ft in length.

    Hardwearing Jeans.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad I'm not the only one that has noticed the reduction in quality of jeans. I will have a look at the M&S jeans though. Tried Dickies and also found the fit to be awful although I do wear their shirts often. I'll also have a look at Snickers workwear. Oh and the...

    Hardwearing Jeans.

Hi all. Bit of an odd topic but... I keep tearing the knees out of my jeans! Been through a few brands now and I am coming to the conclusion that they don't make them like they used to. I used to get a good couple of years wear out of a pair of jeans but the last lot I have bought have had...

    Wood identification ?

From the top pic on my phone the bark supports alder but the wood looks a little on the light side. Could you post a better picture of the bark?

    diamond sharpening plate.

as sean helman said. If you use it dry the easiest way to clean the swarf out is with a pencil rubber.
