Barn door construction questions (what timber sizes to use)

Yes, braces go down towards the hinge side - to transfer load they shouldn't be at less than 45 degrees (they can be steeper), this is why I divided my larger gate into two sub-sections

Barn door construction questions (what timber sizes to use)

If it's only 2m x 2m it's not really practical to fit a smaller door into the main ones, but you might want to consider making the two door leaves different widths e.g. 1.3m and 700mm as this will allow a 'normal' width door for pedestrian access. It's not a garage door but I did this with my...

    MFT - wossit all about?

I had a similar dilemma when I wanted an MFT so I built a really solid one that folded up against the wall when I didn't need it https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/threads/finally-built-a-fold-down-mft.127618/

If you want absolute minimal effort get it powder coated - you'll find they can match virtually any colour paint and you should end up with a flawless smooth finish over the entire surface

    MFT - wossit all about?

There's also a space-saving benefit when using a tracksaw to break down sheet materials, this is very useful when you are constrained by the available space. Although you can easily break down a full sheet with a table saw, you tend to need lots of space around the table saw to manoeuvre the...

    another mft question

Use MRMDF as it's moisture resistant - as far as sealing goes, I sealed mine with a few coats of sanding sealer, others have used wax or Zinsser BIN ( or 1-2-3) or varnish so I'd say, if you want to add a coat of sealer, use whatever you have available, it doesn't have to look pretty ;)

Gravity or spring catch for door

If they'll fit, magnetic catches such as these work well - 3 different sizes and, once fitted, they'll never wear out or need adjustment https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M2X8Z2C?th=1

    Memory foam

We bought a good quality (Somnus) mattress but also use a 80mm latex topper, the mattress is firm and the latex topper provides an extra layer of softness.

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a major issue for me as I didn't 'need' a wide blade - I wanted to try a 1/2" but, after a fair bit of trial & error, I've found that a 1/4" blade works well for me the vast majority of the time.

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

@accipiter - thanks for that, the 1/2" I tried was a TuffSaws Premium 6tpi but I could never get consistent results from it. I'd get it setup perfectly, then after 10-15 mins it would no longer be aligned correctly and I had to go through the whole setup again as though I'd just fitted a new...

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

When I got mine last year, I exchanged emails with Ian at TuffSaws about blade selection and, in one of his replies he said I think your bandsaw will struggle to fully tension the M42 blade so I would stay away from that one but the Premium ones are ideal and the blade life on them is still...

Aldi Bandsaw ( new model) coming soon. Buy it or choose other model

They can take a 1/2"/12.7mm blade but, when I tried one, I found I had to keep fiddling with it to keep it running true. I'd definitely recommend sticking to a max of 10mm

    Bosch GCM 12 GDL

That was a 3rd party seller - and probably a misprice or a used item that was mistakenly listed as new. Things like that crop up all the time and tend to show up on 3Camels or Keepa as short, sharp transients.

    Track saws?

Thank you - that might be an option if I get to a point where I 'must' have one. I'm currently keeping an eye on eBay for second-hand rails in my region that I may be able to collect.
