Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

Not necessarily. Our rectory was G2* but the staircase next door was G1.

Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

The owner usually gets compliance notices to make good before that. Then the merry go round starts.

Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

What I don't understand is that a new build has to be insulated to the nth degree with windows that are sealed tight in order to comply with building regs. A listed building? All this goes out of the window and you have windows, that are as effective at keeping wind out and heat in as an open...

Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

Our previous next door neighbour was a well respected architect (who'd written books on the subject and lectured at the University). His take was that planning officers, and especially conservation officers, we're failed architects with a huge chip on their shoulder. We lived in a 14th century...

    Lathe choice at £1000

If you find one I can recommend the Myford Mystro 2. Turns about 14" over the bed but has a swivel head so you can turn about 23" outboard (I've modified mine so can go up to 36" although not done anything that big yet). The original VFD on mine died so I fitted a matched 2hp motor and VFD from...

    Electric vehicles

Possibly. I drive a skoda superb estate because it's got a huge load space. It's often full of stuff; tools, timber, building gear, furniture, etc. I often commute between north Lincolnshire and Newcastle with a full boot. I don't think there's an EV on the market that could compete.

Post a photo of the last thing you turned

Finished this today. Bowl made from a mallee burr. Finished with sanding sealer and my home brew wax polish. Bit tricky to turn because I wanted to keep the burr shape, consequently a lot of air turning and it was very out of balance. It's also as hard as Hell's kitchen steps!

Just plunge in 5mm or so then widen the cut about 1/4 the thickness of the parting tool on the waste sideand keep repeating until it parts off.

Going to struggle to get the grandchildren and the dog in that though.

Help me with my first ever mig welds, why do they look like Swiss cheese and will I ever improve (cry for help after being demolished on Reddit)

Ooh, you've started something now! Ask 5 welders and you'll get 20 opinions of what's wrong. I've been welding 30 years (just hobby welding, car restoration, bike frames, bit of sculpture) but started with a couple of courses at tech college, not expensive but great for learning. Having said...

    Exploding Pagers - Lebanon

THE partition of Palestine was suggested by UNSCOP in August 1947 and was finally achieved by the UN General Assembly in November 1947. The UK had little or no involvement in the partition process beyond the Balfour declaration in 1917 and the mandate system in 1922 (that was ratified by the...

    2MT pigtail for polishing mop

That's my solution. I centre drilled a dimple in the end of the pigtails so I can pull up the tailstock for a bit of stability. I use polishing mops on the pigtails (to polish motorbike alloy cases) and made an arbor for a wire brush that works well.

Best way cleaning removing rust from vintage carving gouges and chisels?

Seconded. Use it fairly often in restoration projects and you can reuse it multiple times until it gets like treacle.

    Small workshop generator

I can recommend adding Seafoam to stored fuel. I use it for all my stored fuel, petrol and diesel and don't seem to have any problems with grotty carbs in mowers, motorbikes, generator, etc. I add a can to the car tank every now and again (couple of times a year) and get about an extra 2mpg...

Saw blade thickness and safe handling

I often wear a glove for heat protection on my left hand when turning because the shavings coming off a bowl or roughing gouge get really hot. It's always behind the rest though and away from the chuck. Always wear a woodturners jacket as well. Yep, it's got long sleeves (secured with velcro I...

    Hardwood Window Cill

Talked to the sawmill today and they advise sanding and no finish to let the wood expand and contract as it likes. I guess any shakes will add to its character. Don't think that approach would work on a door but on an 8 inch square post should be ok.

Made a thing out of cherry with a stand in hawthorn. Just an experiment in 3 axis turning.

    Hardwood Window Cill

Just done a bit more research and Textrol shouldn't be applied to new wood without their primer. Unfortunately, the primer shouldn't be applied to oak🤦

Is the alternative just to sand and leave natural? Does it really need a finish?

    Hardwood Window Cill

Just jumping on the thread here. I'm building a porch with an overhang at the front supported by 200 x 200 PAR oak posts. I was just going to oil them with either Chestnut finishing oil or lemon oil so it would give it some protection but easy to maintain. Am I barking up the wrong tree here?
