Buying a fully electric used car

With regard to parts availability, a friend of mine bought a Jaguar iPace new last year with the intention of keeping it until it (or he) finally died. After 3 months the battery would only charge to 40% so it was replaced after a wait of nearly 6 months. This replacement battery will now only...

Thin 0.25mm guitar string type wire

Orthodontic wire. Ideally 0.020 Australian wire. It's quite brittle so bending it is a bit awkward but it's nice and stiff. I'll have a look in my box of old dental kit and see what I've got.

    Laser upgrade

I got a Laser Pecker a year or so ago just to engrave thd bases of my woodturning projects. Now I've been using it for a while I've realised it's not powerful enough to do some of the things I'd like to do; engraving paler woods, metal, cutting, etc. What's a good laser upgrade for someone with...

Work so hard you cripple yourself

By the time employer NI is raised, a lot of employers won't bother employing people anyway. A more stupid, anti-business, anti-growth way of tax raising I can't imagine.

Accurate drill-sharpening jig for Sorby Pro-edge?

I use my Pro Edge for drills. Set the table at 60 degrees and then do the rest by hand. It's by no means perfect but it works pretty well. I just accept that bits less than say 4mm will have a limited lifespan because they're tricky to hold but bigger stuff is fine.

    Moss

Tried that, took ages and it was back in a couple of weeks.

    Moss

I'll wait for the weather to improve maybe? 🙄

    Moss

I'm going to order some wet and forget and see how it goes. Thanks all.

    Moss

Ah, I did try that as well with little success. Think I must have a mutant moss!

    Moss

Has anyone got a good solution for killing moss on a tarmac drive? A big chunk of the drive is very shady (trees have TPOs so we can't do much) and moss grows like mad. I've tried a couple of commercial products, a burner, bleach and salt and nothing seems to kill it off. Any ideas?

    Axminster Newcastle Store closed

Woodsmith don't do much turning equipment/tools (they do a treadle lathe). It's mainly carving and woodcraft type of kit. I've never seen so many different types of axes and hatchets!

    Home made turning tools

I've made quite a few tools, mostly from HSS. I've tried hardening and tempering and I think it's hardly worth all the effort. I've made tools from unhardened and tempered HSS and the edge lasts almost as long. Gouges are a bit tricky, it's a lot of grinding to get a good flute and a nice shape...

    Keir Starmer

As a dentist in Newcastle several years ago I used to treat several Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi families who had claimed asylum. These families comprised Dad, Mum, one, two or three kids who had fled persecution in their country. All the parents were well educated (doctors, engineers, solicitors...

    Which vape?

I think 'popcorn lung' will also become a major problem. Propylrne glycol is a potent irritant so I'm guessing in years to come we're going to see a lot more lung fibrosis.

    Combined Flu ***

Indeed. As my dad used to say "Life is a sexually transmitted disease with 100% mortality".

First stick welds, advice? 2.5mm mild steel, quite thin e6013 electrodes, 50 amps. Why would they be ‘bad welds’ and what do I look for in welds?

Rather than running beads try welding two pieces together (butt or fillet). That'll give you a better idea how you're progressing.

    Keir Starmer

Equally, second jobs should not be allowed. How an MP can deliver service for his/her constituents (their prime reason for existence) whilst holding down several other posts with various companies is beyond me. Then, we've got the issue of employing multiple family members in 'constituency...

    Epoxy thickener

I think if you're leaving the walls reasonably thick I'd just turn and finish that as is, the cracks are part of its charm. If you're really worried about it exploding I'd run thin CA into the cracks (but don't fill them fully) and a quick spray of accelerator. That'll be enough to stabilise the...

    Wood id.

Almost certainly yew. This is a vase I made from a chunk from my neighbour when he'd done a bit of pruning.

Would you buy a grade 2 listed cottage?

My experience was very different. We weren't allowed to change any windows (10 foot high sashes). They all fitted where they touched so we had to stuff newspaper round the gaps in winter to stop the draughts. We weren't allowed to install secondary glazing. One of the kids broke a window with a...
