Ladders against gutters... And what to do when getting onto a roof ladder?

Hi I'm back with my second ladder question... I must admit, I usually just lean my ladder against the gutters and I've not had a problem yet. But I can see that a stand off is a better idea, and at the same time will make working easier. So I'm going to get myself one. But I've got some...

Roof ladder - what's the ideal length? And is two piece a no-no?

Many thanks for all the replies. Some really useful tips in there. My highest roof is around 4.5m / 15 foot at the gutter line. The actual roof I have to do work on soon is much lower luckily. A good one to cut my teeth on - although not literally I hope!! I enjoy working off ladders...

Roof ladder - what's the ideal length? And is two piece a no-no?

Hi I need to get a roof ladder and I've not had one before so just wanted to check... 1. What's the ideal length? Is it best if the ladder stops just short of the last tile / before the gutter. Is having the ladder extend belong the gutter a bad thing (obviously not to use! ...just it...

How to cut a slate slab (and how difficult is it)?

The car wasn't the issue the only issue.... In fact, I might have JUST squeezed it in (well, theoretically, actually doing it would have been another matter!) But apparently it was deep in a back garden with narrow access and no-one available to help with the lifting (so would have been just...

How to cut a slate slab (and how difficult is it)?

Crikey, I somehow missed all these replies so was very pleasantly surprised to find them just now... Great stuff! In the end, I wasn't able to get that particular piece but will have the need to cut slate in the future so all really helpful info that I'll refer back to Many thanks one and all

How to cut a slate slab (and how difficult is it)?

That being said, I've just measured the blade and up to the point where the blade is held by the metal piece it is only 33mm. With the slate being 30mm, I'm guessing I'd need more clearance?

How to cut a slate slab (and how difficult is it)?

Many thanks for the quick answers. I don't suppose I could trouble you for a link to the kind of blade I need? I'm just not too sure where to start. The angle grinder I have is an old 100mm Makita - model 9501B. Many thanks

How to cut a slate slab (and how difficult is it)?

Hi An old slate slab has come up that I would like to use for a kitchen worktop. It's from an old snooker table and is 30mm thick. I'll need to cut it roughly in the first instance so that I can move it and fit it into the car. I can then cut it more precisely once the unit is made and I...

Aluminium Bifold vs Slider Door - which is more robust? Which will last the longest?

Hi all We're looking to have new doors put in soon. The opening is 2.1m wide x 2.05m tall. I've been reading and thinking lots about it these last few days and I've got all the usual pros and cons covered, i.e. being able to open the whole thing up with bifolds (but needing space for the...

Strimmer maintenance - cleaning it up for the season... (and changing spark plug boot)

Thanks for the additional replies and tips. Unfortunately I had to use E10 this time around as it was all I was able to get. I've drained off after use, so hopefully just the once will not have caused too much damage? I hope not anyway! Cheers

Strimmer maintenance - cleaning it up for the season... (and changing spark plug boot)

Good morning. Had to go to work on Thursday so today's now the strimming day.... I was going to give it a quick clean anyhow seeing as the covers are off. I was told white spirit would be good, followed by some carb/brake cleaner, presumably to "rinse it". I don't have any compressed air...

Strimmer maintenance - cleaning it up for the season... (and changing spark plug boot)

Many thanks for the answers and for the help, much appreciated. The old cap was still there, just in a post-mouse chew state. I could not see anything in it aside from the spring which I've re-used. If it had a suppressor built in, would that have been easy to spot? I'm not sure what it...

Strimmer maintenance - cleaning it up for the season... (and changing spark plug boot)

Hi all OK, so it's a bit late in the year to start the strimming, but I've been busy...! And so have the mice. The little bleeders have had a feast on the spark plug boot. Local shop didn't have any replacements, but I have a defunct chainsaw and have taken the one off that to use. Is...

    Drying (a lot of) firewood

I process all my firewood by hand, with a variety of different sized saws, a bunch of wedges and old axe heads, and a sledge hammer. The splinting axe rarely comes out of the shed nowadays. I much prefer to split long lengths into 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8s - depending on the diameter - and then saw...

How to use this old wire fence tensioner? All the gear and no idea!

So sorry - totally forgot to come back to this to say thank you for the help and replies. It was only a small section of fence that needed repairing after a tree had come down onto it. In the end, the farmer said it did not need to be all that tight, so I just tightened it manually and put the...

How to use this old wire fence tensioner? All the gear and no idea!

Hi A while back I picked up an old tensioning tool for stock fencing but haven't had a need to use it... Until now! I'll attach a photo. I can't wrap my head around how to use it, and so far have not been able to find any videos on YouTube using this kind of tool. Could anyone who knows...

What size timbers for a belfast sink stand?

That's good thinking, and what we went for in the WC/utility room where we have a baby belfast. The thing is with the kitchen, the sink itself has a depth of 400mm, but will installed the standard 600mm from the wall. So there will be a 200mm back piece for the taps and all manner of other...

What size timbers for a belfast sink stand?

OK, thanks, I'll have a watch. I've been trawling through google images though this evening and came across this, which is along the lines of what I had in mind. Do you think it wouldn't cope with the weight? I wouldn't go as chunky as that unless I had to, and it wouldn't need to look nice...
